Huskies Baseball Wins Rematch with Desert 12-1

PALM DESERT, CA. -- The East Los Angeles College baseball team won 12-1 at College of the Desert in its second meeting with the Roadrunners in three days.

The Huskies pounded a 10-hit, 8-4 win at Desert on Friday.

ELAC scored first in the seven-hit win today in its third straight victory in three tries. The Huskies scored two runs in the top of the third inning.

After an out, sophomore short stop Matthew Sosa (Whittier High School) was hit by a pitch. Freshman first baseman Elija Martinez (La Serna HS) walked. Sosa advanced to third on a passed ball and scored unearned. Sophomore right fielder Elias Maldonado (Northview HS) singled (RBI). ELAC led 2-0.

Desert followed with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Roadrunner freshman center fielder Jordan Crisp (Mayfair HS) singled, then advanced to second on a passed ball and got to third on a wild pitch. A ground out scored a run. Although the Roadrunners singled again, winning sophomore pitcher Steven Nuno (Warren HS) closed the inning with a strike and got Desert’s Brian McKenna to ground out. Desert cut the lead to 2-1.

In the fourth inning, the Huskies scored five runs off a double, a single and three walks. Two Huskies were hit by a pitch. Sophomore catcher Matthew Shults was hit twice. ELAC led 7-1. The Huskies scored two unearned runs in the seventh from a hit and a Desert error.  

ELAC freshman pitcher Diego Sanchez (Alhambra HS) hammered a three-run homer in the ninth inning for the final 12-1 score.

Maldonado and Sanchez led the Husky bats. Maldonado doubled, singled twice and brought home four RBIs.  Sanchez’s homer included three RBIs.

Martinez singled with two RBIs. Two Huskies each added an RBI, Shults and freshman center fielder Troy Maki (Mark Keppel HS) who had a sacrifice fly. Two other Huskies singled, sophomore designated hitter Damian Lomeli (St. Paul HS) and freshman left fielder Ruben Hernandez (Walnut HS).

The Huskies used four pitchers. Nuno pitched five innings, struck out eight Roadrunners and gave up three hits. He retired the side in the fourth and fifth innings.

Sophomore Bernie Fernandez (Cathedral HS) pitched two innings and struck out two. In one inning on the mound, Sanchez retired the side with two strikeouts. Sophomore Thomas Escobedo (Northview HS) pitched the ninth inning and had a strike.

ELAC continues play at No. 20 Citrus College on Thursday, February 2 at 2 p.m.
