ELAC Baseball Team Loses to No. 20 Citrus

MONTEREY PARK, CA. — The Huskies baseball team handed No. 20 Citrus College its first defeat, 10-3, in Glendora on February 1. Today, the Owls returned the favor.

Citrus (4-2) defeated the Huskies by the same score, 10-3, and ended East Los Angeles College’s (6-1) six-game win streak.  

It’s the first loss against a ranked team for ELAC in three tries. Citrus is ranked No. 20 in the California Community College Baseball Coaches Association South Region Preseason Poll.  

Citrus scored six runs in the first three innings going through three ELAC pitchers. The Huskies scored three runs from three hits in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Two ELAC sophomores singled, center fielder Anthony Soto (Garfield High School) and third baseman Matthew Sosa (Whittier HS). Freshman designated hitter Bryan Duenas (Warren HS) flied out to center field. The sacrifice brought home a run batted in. Sophomore first baseman Damian Lomeli (St. Paul HS) was hit by a pitch. Two wild pitches later, sophomore right fielder Elias Maldonado (Northview HS) grounded out (RBI). Freshman catcher Gabriel Jimenez (Roosevelt HS) singled and ELAC tallied three runs.

Two Huskies each singled in an RBI, Duenas and Jimenez. Two ELAC freshmen doubled, left fielder Brandon Acosta (California HS) and center fielder Troy Maki (Mark Keppel HS). Freshman short stop Grant Victor (St. Francis HS) singled.

ELAC sophomore pitcher Logan Gibbons (Taylorsville, UT / Taylorsville HS) took the loss and stands 0-1.

Four of the seven ELAC pitchers on the mound today each struck out one, sophomore Bernie Fernandez (Cathedral HS), sophomore Thomas Escobedo (Northview HS), sophomore Elmer Hernandez (University HS) and Sanchez.

ELAC plays a two-game series against No. 6 Riverside City College (5-1) in Riverside tomorrow and at home on Saturday at 5 p.m.
