East Los Angeles College Baseball Defeats Compton 11-1 and 6-1

MONTEREY PARK, CA. — The East Los Angeles College baseball team won its third series of the season 2-0 with an 11-1 win today against Compton College and a 6-1 win yesterday over the Tartars.

In the 10-run win today, ELAC pitcher Paul Kosanovich (Temple City HS) struck out four batters, walked three and held Compton’s offense to one run in 7.0 innings. Kosanovich improved to 2-2, 2.31 with 34 strikeouts in 39 innings.

Kosanovich’s 2.31 earned run average ranks him at No. 41 in the state from over 400 pitchers. He was pretty flawless in the early going. After an initial walk, Kosanovich and the Huskies got nine straight outs.

ELAC scored four runs during this time, three runs in the first inning from three hits and another in the third from a single and two balks.

The three hits in the bottom of the first were from short stop Matthew Sosa (Whittier HS), who smashed a lead-off double, sophomore designated hitter Zech Jarrard (Temple City HS) who doubled and sophomore right fielder Elias Maldonado (Northview High School) who singled. Jarrard singled in the third inning. After two straight Compton balks, Maldonado hit a sacrifice fly to center field (RBI).

The Huskies powered four runs in the fourth inning from seven hits beginning with four consecutive singles from freshman catcher Gabriel Jimenez (Roosevelt HS), freshman center fielder Ruben Hernandez (Walnut HS), Sosa (RBI) and freshman second baseman Grant Victor (St. Francis HS).

The Huskies matched a season high 17 hits. Three Huskies each hit three times. Jarrard doubled and singled twice (3 RBIs), Victor doubled and singled twice (RBI) and Jimenez singled three times.

Four Huskies each hit twice. Maldonado singled twice (3 RBIs), freshman first baseman Bryan Duenas (Warren HS) doubled and singled (2 RBIs), Sosa, who has a batting average of .389, doubled and singled (RBI) and Hernandez singled twice.

Compton hit three times. Sophomore second baseman Mike Hernandez (Fullerton HS) singled twice and freshman short stop Billy Sanchez      (Bell HS) doubled.

In the 6-1 win yesterday at Compton, the Huskies scattered three runs in five innings and scored three runs in the top of the ninth. Compton avoided the shut out with a run in the bottom of the ninth without a hit, aided by two walks and a wild pitch.

Ace sophomore pitcher Steven Nuno (Warren HS) recorded the win. He improves to 3-3 and struck out a Husky-season high 10 batters in 6.2 innings. Nuno has totaled 35 strikeouts in 36.1 innings. Sophomore pitcher Tyler Oblea (Cathedral HS) struck out two batters and didn’t allow any hits in 1.2 innings. Freshman pitcher Andres Alonso (Cathedral HS) struck out a batter in the final two outs.

The Huskies outhit Compton 11-3. Sosa led the Husky bats with three hits. He doubled and singled twice (RBI). Hernandez followed with two hits and singled twice (RBI). Six Huskies each singled, sophomore designated hitter Damian Lomeli (St. Paul HS) who had a run batted in, Victor (RBI), Duenas (RBI), freshman short stop Troy Maki (Mark Keppel HS) (RBI), Maldonado and sophomore right fielder Logan Gibbons (Taylorsville, UT / Taylorsville HS).

The Huskies (11-9) play a two-game series against Los Angeles Harbor College (11-11) on Thursday in Wilmington and on Saturday at home.
