ELAC men’s basketball wins 98-57

MONTEREY PARK, CA — No. 11 Southern California Regional-ranked East Los Angeles College kept pace with the South Coast Conference North Division leaders with a 98-57 win against Rio Hondo College today.

With three games remaining in the regular season, the Huskies need to win out to earn their second straight SCC North title.

With the win against Rio Hondo, ELAC (18-6, 5-2) remains tied for second place with No. 12 Mt. San Antonio College (15-9, 5-2), who won 80-72 at Pasadena City College (6-18, 1-6) tonight.

No. 18 state-ranked Chaffey College (20-7, 6-1) sits on top of the SCC North after escaping with an 86-84 win vs. upstart LA Trade Tech College (13-11, 4-3) averting a four-way tie for first.

In tonight’s win, the Huskies opened with a 20-4 run. Sophomore guard Zeno Lake (Compton HS) scored the final six points of the run, the latter a two-pointer (assist sophomore guard Jalen Gilmore) with 12:12 remaining in the first half.

Rio Hondo responded with a 6-0 run, its biggest run of the night to close the gap to 20-10 with 10:26 left in the half. The Huskies ended the first half scoring with a 29-12 run capped off by Lake’s two free throws and ELAC led 49-22.

Sophomore guard Jalen Gilmore connected on a three-point swish late in the final period that gave the Huskies a 44-point lead, their largest of the game.

Lake scored a game-high 21 points and hit 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. Freshman forward Roderick Williams (Price HS) scored 20 points for the Huskies and had a double double with 14 rebounds, seven off the offensive boards.

Husky freshman Jermaine Small-Camacho came off the bench and scored a season-high 16 points that included 4-of-5 free throws.

Rio Hondo guard Damian Salcedo scored a team-high 12 points for the Roadrunners. Teammate and freshman forward Jesus Jr. (Junior) Hernandez scored 11 points.

The Huskies shot 48.6 percent of their shots (36-of-74), just short of their state leading 50.7 percent. ELAC scored 18 points from free throws, which is their average per game, fourth best in the state.

ELAC scored 59 points from its bench more than doubling their scored bench points from the schools’ first meeting. Freshman guard Robert Fuller (St. Bernard HS) had a game-high five assists.

ELAC hosts their crosstown rivals LA Trade Tech on Friday at 5 p.m.
