Men's soccer loses to No. 3 Mt. SAC

MONTEREY PARK, CA — The East Los Angeles College men’s soccer team outshot the state’s No. 3-ranked Mt. San Antonio College, but the Mounties converted four times to win 4-1.

The teams were tied for the SCC lead when they played to a scoreless draw on Oct. 2, but in this game Mt. SAC was the decisive winner.

“We are a better team than we played today,” said sophomore Albert Chamagua (Glendale High School). “We didn’t try our best. Hopefully, we will stick to our plan, ‘one game at a time,’ and (turn) it around for a win in our next game.”

ELAC is on a three-game losing skid, outshooting its opponent once again, but not finding a way to score. Mt. SAC won its fifth consecutive game and remains in first place in the SCC.

As a result, Huskies, 5-5-6 overall and 2-4-3 in the South Coast Conference, dropped to seventh place.

ELAC scored its goal in the 83rd minute.

Mt. SAC (11-3-2, 6-1-2) opened the scoring with two first half goals. Freshman forward Manuel Medina (Los Altos HS) scored the first scored in the 29th minute off an assist by freshman midfielder Eliel Trejo (Chino Ayala) in the 43rd minute. The ELAC goalie was on the 10-yard line and Medina easily scored.

ELAC outshot Mt. SAC 10-6 in the second half. Mt. SAC freshman forward Michael Flores (Sierra Vista) scored a goal at 49:23 (assist Medina).

Freshman forward Jhonata Batista (South Hills) closed the scoring in stoppage time. He took a cross from sophomore midfielder Rolando Munoz (assist), outran an ELAC defender and beat the ELAC goalie, who was out on the 15-yard line, and shot into an empty net.

ELAC lost to Los Angeles Harbor College (5-9-2, 3-5-1), 3-2, on Oct. 2. The Huskies beat Harbor in the first half of SCC play, 2-0, on Sept. 29. Harbor stunned Cerritos today 6-2.

ELAC plays at Pasadena City College (1-13-2, 1-7-1) on Friday, Oct. 30 at 3 p.m.
