ELAC men’s soccer earns draw and win

LONG BEACH, CA — The East Los Angeles College men’s soccer team is unbeaten in two non-conference crossover games. The Huskies and Long Beach City College tied 1-1 tonight and ELAC defeated El Camino College 4-0 last Friday.

Husky sophomore forward Ernesto Rubalcaba (Montebello High School) scored an unassisted goal off a deflection in the 40th minute. His quick reaction gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead, which held through the half.

The Huskies were the aggressor in the first half. They pressed and outshot Long Beach 15-4. The Huskies had 10 first half shots on goal to three for Long Beach.

Also in the first half, ELAC freshman goalkeeper Joshua Moreno (Montebello HS) saved all three of the Long Beach shots on goal attempts while Viking freshman goalie Saul Ocampo (Artesia HS) had nine saves. The Huskies had five corner kicks to two for Long Beach.

The second half was a different game. Long Beach outshot the Huskies 7-3 and doubled the amount of corner kicks.

In the 54th minute ELAC sophomore midfielder Jorge Chavez (Cathedral HS) and Viking sophomore defender Hector Rojo (Bellflower HS) each received a red card. This hurt the Huskies on offense. Chavez took four shots before the ejection.

The teams adjusted play. Long Beach rallied for a goal in the 77th minute when sophomore defender Christopher Ribet’s second-chance header, off a tipped save from his own previous shot, tied the score at 1-1.

The Huskies reacted with offensive play that resulted with two shots on goal, each saved by a leaping Ocampo. Neither team put forward any threats for the remainder of the game.

The Huskies outshot Long Beach 18-13 in total, and almost doubled the Vikings’ shot on goal attempts – 13-7. Moreno had six saves for the Huskies while Ocampo had 13 saves for the Vikings. The Huskies received a yellow card (Augustin Barros) as did Long Beach.

ELAC shots came from sophomore forward Hector Reyes (Los Angeles HS) and Rubalcaba took three shots each while sophomore forward sophomore forward Cesar Alvarez (Bell Gardens HS) and freshman midfielder Luis Alvarado (Elizabeth Learning Center HS) each took two shots.

Rubalcaba took three shots on goals, Reyes and Alvarado took two each. Huskies with one shot on goal each included sophomore midfielder Alvaro Torres Pena (Cali, Colombia / San Luis Gonzaga HS), Chavez, Alvarez, sophomore midfielder Martin Oregel and freshman defender Salvador Ramirez Barbosa (Locke HS).

The Huskies improve to 2-7-5 overall. Long Beach is 3-6-4.

ELAC will try to make it three straight non-conference games without a loss this Friday, Oct. 21 when the Huskies host LA Harbor College (4-8-2) at Weingart Stadium at 6 p.m.
