ELAC men’s soccer team ends regular season on a skid

MONTEREY PARK, CA — The East Los Angeles College men's soccer team ended the regular season with a three-game losing skid that included a 1-0 loss to Compton College today.

ELAC falls to 9-7-5 overall and waits for playoff seedings, determined by Power Points, which will be confirmed next Tuesday. The current Power Points listed on the CCCAA website, include the Huskies with enough Power Points to earn a bid.

Against Compton, the Huskies took the first two shots of the game, the first in the 2nd minute and again in the 10th minute.

After a Compton foul, freshman midfielder Jerson Maravilla (Fremont High School) took a free kick at the 23-yard sideline, which resulted in a shot on goal, cleared from the Compton goalie.

Near the end of the half, ELAC had a corner kick, which resulted in a bicycle kick from sophomore forward Valentin Mercado (Animo Ralph Bunche HS) which sailed over the post.

The Huskies outshot Compton 4-2 in the first half, had two corner kicks to none for Compton, had more shot on goals 2-1, but could not finish their opportunities.

Compton took four corner kicks in the second half with the latter resulting in a goal in the 70th minute. ELAC sophomore goalkeeper Joshua Moreno (Montebello HS) saved an initial SOG, which slipped out of his hands and Compton put it away for the score. Compton outshot ELAC in the second half 4-2. Each team received four yellow cards.

The Huskies closed out South Coast Conference play with a 3-2 loss at Chaffey College on Tuesday. The ELAC goals were from freshman forward Kevin Rodriguez (Hawkins HS) in the 75th minute and freshman forward Salvador Alvarez (Locke HS) off a penalty kick in the 90th minute.

The Huskies couldn’t take advantage of offensive edge. ELAC took nine shots and had more corner kick’s 4-2.

With nothing to lose, Pasadena City College (5-11-4) stunned the heavily favored Huskies 3-2 last Friday.

The scoring summary included Pasadena taking a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute from a Romio Sislian unassisted hard drive near the top of box. Mercado shot a goal in the 28th minute off an assist from sophomore midfielder Edward Robles (Wallis Annenberg HS) and the half ended in a 1-1 deadlock.

Pasadena scored two unanswered goals, the first from a penalty kick from Pablo Buenrostro in the 74th minute followed from another Sislian goal (assist Anthony Jimenez), which was a header off a free kick cross.

Robles scored a goal for the Huskies off an assist from sophomore Luis Alvarado (Elizabeth Learning Center) in the 87th minute. Pasadena took 13 shots on goal to ELAC’s eight. Moreno had 10 saved for the Huskies.
