ELAC Men’s T&F Wins the Long Jump at the Redlands Invitational

REDLANDS, CA — The East Los Angeles College men’s track and field team won its second straight long jump event against four-year university competition at the Redlands Invitational at Ashel Cunningham Track.

The Huskies have won three high jump events in all three meets this season that were hosted by four-year universities.

ELAC freshman Garrison Harris (GA / Elbert County High School) won the event from a field of 46 men on his last jump of 7.13 meters (23 feet, 4.75 inches), which is the seventh best mark in the nation among community college men.

Freshman Dijon Donaldson (Bellflower HS) placed third in 6.77 meters (22” 2.54’), which is the 11th best jump the state. Sophomore Joshua Taylor (Franklin HS) placed fifth with a leap of 6.70 meters (21’ 11.78”). Taylor’s 6.99 mark from last week, when he won the long jump at the Cal State LA Invitational, is the third best jump in the state.

ELAC’s 4 x 100-meter relay team won its heat in its initial race of the season and finished fourth overall from a field of 10 teams. The team consisting of sophomore Jamal Brinkley (Santiago HS) and freshmen Jakob Tilford (Colony HS), Harris and Kirk Baril (Millbrae Mills HS) finished with a Top 10 time in Southern California.

100-meter dash: Baril placed second in his heat with a personal record of 11.05 seconds and finished 22nd overall from a field of 93 men. Tilford won his heat in 11.11 and finished 29th overall. Freshman Hector Gutierrez (South East HS) took sixth in the same heat as Tilford with a personal record edging Brady Eamon of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges 12.23 to 12.36.  Nicholas Hutson (Paramount HS) placed fourth in his heat in 12.33.

200-meter dash: Baril placed 6th in his heat in 24.05. Gutierrez finished 6th in his heat in 24.96. Hutson took second place in his heat edging Occidental College freshman Flot River 25.24 to 25.38.

800-meter run: Two Huskies ran in the same heat. Freshman Steven Garcia (Montebello HS) placed fourth with a personal record of 2:12.49. Freshman Joshua Cardenas (Schurr HS) placed ninth in 2:21.94.

1,500-meter run: Garcia and Cardenas ran in different heats. Garcia took 14th in his heat in 4:40.61 and Cardenas finished 12th in his heat in 4:53.54 in his first attempt in this event.

5,000-meter run: Nathan Rangel (Montebello HS), the team’s fastest long-distance runner, ran his long awaited first 5,000 run of the season and placed 15th overall in 17:02.64.

Triple Jump: Donaldson took on his initial triple jump of the season and leaped from ninth place to sixth in his third and final jump in 13.41 meters (43’ 11.95”). Taylor finished in 13.07 meters (42’ 10.57”) and edged Davis Catolico of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges for 12th place by 5-1/2 feet.
