Huskies Men’s T&F Get Solid Results in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, CA — The East Los Angeles College men’s track and field team had solid results at the 40th annual Aztec Open Friday at the San Diego State University Aztrack Sports Deck.

Three Huskies took second through fourth places in the long jump against competition from several universities. Brigham Young University sophomore Marcus Daily won the event in 7.06 meters.

ELAC All-American sophomore Joshua Taylor (Franklin High School) took second place with a distance of 6.95 meters. Taylor’s jump today is the 16th best jump in the nation among community college men.

Freshman Dijon Donaldson (Bellflower HS) placed third in 6.77 meters and freshman Garrison Harris (GA / Elbert County HS) placed fourth with a jump of 6.71 meters. Harris’ best mark this season of 7.13 meters (23’ 39.2”), is the ninth best leap in the nation among Community College men.

The ELAC 4 x 100-meter relay got past Biola University 43.21 to 46.01 for a fifth-place finish in the event. The all-freshmen Husky team has the 12th best time in Southern California—Kirk Baril (Millbrae Mills HS), Jamal Brinkley (Santiago HS), Jakob Tilford (Colony HS) and Harris.

Stat Sheet

100-meter dash: Five Huskies competed in the 100 dash. Tilford placed an impressive 11th overall from a field of 46 in 11.17. Brinkley took 15th overall in 11.33. Baril placed 17th overall in 11.40. Nicholas Hutson (Paramount HS) finished with a personal record of 12.15. Hector Gutierrez (South East HS) ran his third straight personal record in this event in 12.21.

200-meter dash: Tilford finished with the top ELAC time of 22.36 and placed 14th overall in a field of 50. Brinkley ran 22.98 with Garrison right behind in 23.21. Gutierrez and Hutson each finished with their second personal records of the meet with times of 24.52 and 25.27, respectively.

400-meter dash: In his third event of the day, Harris finished the 400-dash edging Chapman’s Hiroaki Shigeyama 52.63 to 52.66.

800-meter run: All three Huskies ran personal records in this event. Nathan Rangel (Montebello HS) in 2:08.10, Steven Garcia (Montebello HS) in 2:09.26 and Joshua Cardenas (Schurr HS) in 2:11.67.

1,500-meter run: Garcia placed 7th in his heat in 4:44.57 and Cardenas was right behind him taking 8th with a personal record of 4:47.36.

5,000-meter run: Rangel, ELAC’s hope in this long-distance race during South Coast Conference Championships and the postseason, ran a personal record of 16:36.09 finishing a notable ninth overall.

Triple Jump: Donaldson placed fifth in this event with a mark of 13.63 meters. Taylor took ninth place taking only one jump of 13.29 meters.

4 x 400 Relay: The Husky 4 x 400 relay team of Garcia, Gutierrez, Baril and Tilford and placed fifth.
