ELAC Men’s Track and Field is in Fourth After Day 1
TORRANCE, CA — The Huskies men’s track and field team is in fourth place with after Day 1 in the South Coast Conference Championships held today at the El Camino College’s Murdock Stadium.
With 12 points, East Los Angeles College is in fourth place, behind third place El Camino College with 13 points and ahead of fifth place Long Beach City College with six points.
Both the Championship Prelims and Finals were held on Day 1 and will continue on Day 2 with mostly Championship Finals events. The Triple Jump semifinals and finals were today and ELAC came through with a second and fifth place finishes.
PAW TRACKS
Jakob Tilford (Colony HS) led the Huskies with a personal record in the 200-meter dash and a 7th place finish overall. He placed eighth in the 100-meter dash. He moves on to the finals in both events.
Kirk Baril (Millbrae Mills HS) is injured and out for the season according to ELAC Head Coach Browne. His absence affects two of ELAC’s events, the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relay teams.
Jamal Brinkley (Santiago HS) is also injured, which affects the Husky 4x100-meter relay team. The Huskies will probably not be able to compete in the event on Friday according to Browne.
Joshua Cardenas (Schurr HS) ended his first year today in the 800-meter run. He was edged by Cerritos College freshman Josiah Jackson for 18th place, 2:09.52 to 2:16.76.
Dijon Donaldson (Bellflower HS) hopped and leaped to a personal record of 13.42 meters (20.05 feet) in the triple jump. His lifetime-best mark couldn’t have come at a better time. Donaldson advanced in the event to the Southern California Championships in May.
Steven Murillo Garcia (Montebello HS) ended his season with a personal record today in the 800-meter run. The ever-improved Garcia ran his fourth personal record in the event this season and second straight.
Hector Gutierrez (South East HS) finished his 100-meter dash with a personal record of 12.07.
Garrison Harris (GA / Elbert County HS) is ranked No. 4 in the state in the long jump and is the No. 1 seed in the SCC Championships. Although injured, he will attempt to advance to the SoCal Championships in the event. It is not clear if he will be able to compete in the 400-meter relay, but Coach Browne might go with a back-up.
Nicholas Hutson (Paramount HS) was edged by Gutierrez in the 100-dash and finished in 12.21 running in his second meet in three days. He placed just behind Compton’s Christian Catching in the 200-meter run.
All-American Joshua Taylor (Franklin HS) tied his personal record in the triple jump at the correct time of the season. His leap of 13.99-meters earned him a second-place finish, a second-place medal and a trip to the SoCal Championships in the event. Taylor is the No. 2 seed in Friday’s long jump event.
