Men’s cross country takes second place

ORANGE, CA — The East Los Angeles College men’s cross country team brought home its first trophies of the season with a second place finish at the Santiago Canyon College Invitational and two Huskies finishing in the top-10.

ELAC freshman Martin Perez (Norwalk High School) placed second in 22:46.29 minutes, only five seconds behind winner Nathan-Michael Guzman of Pasadena City College (22:40.95).

ELAC freshman Nathan Rangel (Montebello HS) also placed in the top-10 with a ninth place finish in 23:49.67, a personal record.

Pasadena City was the team champion, host Santiago Canyon took third and College of the Desert finished fourth, in last place.

According to James Maynard, ELAC cross country head coach, coaches from other colleges said that the Huskies are improved and they look like a different team from the season-opening SoCal Preview meet two weeks ago.

The Huskies improved their times with five personal records on the same course they ran two weeks ago, Irvine Regional Park.

ELAC improved an average of 00:56 seconds-per-man since the season-opening meet. Pasadena City ran a slower average of 00:39 seconds-per-man since the SoCal Preview.

Running faster with each meet, ELAC is closing ground on faster teams to make a run at qualifying for the SoCal Championships, held after the regular season in November.

Husky freshmen, Victor Jauregui (Montebello HS), Allen Au Yeyng (San Gabriel HS) and Raymond Rascon (Pioneer HS) placed 13 through 15, respectively.

Jauregui ran a personal record in 24:09.64, as did Au Yeyng in 24:20.37, Jonathan Pedroza (Garfield HS) who placed 20th in 25:26.04 and, Pablo Hernandez (Downtown Magnets HS) who placed 32nd in 28:21.42.

Freshman newcomer David Torres placed No. 21 in 25:38.18. Freshman Anthony Jovel (Bell Gardens HS) placed 29th in 27:47.29 and sophomore Rene Flores (Garfield HS) placed 30th in 27:51.76. Freshman Matthew Ruiz (Bell Gardens HS) placed 39th in 30:57.61.

The Huskies next compete in the San Bernardino Valley College Invitational on Friday, Oct. 7 at 10:45 a.m.
