ELAC Cross Country Improves at Mt. SAC Invitational
WALNUT, Calif. — At the Mt. SAC Invitational, the Huskies men’s cross country team competed on the most difficult course of the season and continued to gain ground on other colleges.
East Los Angeles College gained time on a few of the top teams who continue to run speeds similar to what they ran early season at the SoCal Preview Meet, Sept. 14.
From here on out it’s all downhill, so to speak. ELAC’s final meet of the regular season takes place on a faster, flatter course in two weeks. The Huskies each set individual personal records on this course at the SoCal Preview and aim to do the same in two weeks.
At Mt. SAC, the top three Huskies finished 1-2-3 for ELAC for the third straight meet, English major Daniel Morales (Bravo Medical Magnet School), Kinesiology major Allen Yeung (San Gabriel HS) and Fire Technology major Justin Frias (Arroyo HS) who continues to improve the most at among his teammates. ELAC competed without Arturo Fernandez who is the fourth fastest Husky on the team.
Morales finished in 23 minutes and 54 seconds with a flying sprint that was one second faster at the finish line than Diego Madrid of Santiago Canyon College. Yeung clocked in at 24:30 pulling ahead to the end in the final 200 meters over Chaffey College’s Vincent Ramirez. Frias finished in 24:53 passing two El Camino runners in the final 200 meters.
Isaac Alegandrealbizures (Vail HS), a Journalism major, crossed the finish line next for the Huskies tied at 26:24 with Santiago Canyon College’s Jose Villarruel. Based on finishing hundredths a second faster, Alegandrealbizures was awarded the higher place.
Mathematics Major Daniel Garcia (Bell Gardens HS) was the final Husky who scored. Garcia edged teammate Efren Machorro (La Causa YouthBuild Charter School of California) who is majoring in Architectural Drafting. Machorro improved so much he fell slightly short of his personal record by seconds.
Business Administration major Joshua Cardenas placed next for ELAC in 32:08 and with a determined sprint edged Oxnard’s Pedro Martin. Jairo Espinoza (Synergy Quantum Academy) followed and ran past Izaq Davolt of Pasadena City College in his finish.

ELAC competes in the South Coast Cross Country Conference Championships at Don Knabe Regional Park (19700 Bloomfield Ave., Cerritos, CA 9070) Friday, Oct. 26 at 11 a.m. for the right to advance to the SoCal Championships a week later on the same course.
