ELAC BESTS RIO HONDO 7-5
Apr 23, 2019

Putting yesterday's tough loss to PCC behind them, the Huskies bounced back today to defeat the Roadrunners on Sophomore Appreciation Day by the score of 7-5. Second baseman Alyssa Duran led the offense, going 3 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored. The top of the order - Julie Granadeno, Sarah Chavez and Pua Johnson - each had two hits and an RBI apiece. Starting pitcher Majisty Shomo battled herself into the win column by going six and a third innings.

The Huskies took control early, leading 5-0 at the end of three and looking to possibly force a mercy-rule win. But Rio got back into the game with three unearned runs in the top of the fourth. ELAC would enhance their lead with two more runs in the fifth, but Rio managed to hang around thanks to a solo homerun in the sixth, and a based loaded walk in the seventh when Rio threatened to spoil another Huskies win. Reliever Serena Lopez would induce Rio's Alyssa Medrano into a groundout to secure the much-needed win.

With the victory, ELAC (9-12, 19-18 overall) keeps their postseason hopes alive as they visit Mt San Antonio tomorrow for their regular season finale. The Huskies will look to avenge their previous two losses to the Mounties; Mt. SAC is currently undefeated in South Coast Conference play (20-0, 35-4 overall) and an upset win on the road would make a resounding statement as to why East LA deserves to make the playoffs.

SOPHOMORE APPRECIATION

Starters Shomo, Granadeno and Chavez were three of the four outgoing sophomores honored during the pregame (along with pinch-runner and reserve Kimberly Rodriguez). It was the final home regular season game for the ladies as they look to transfer onward towards their respective four-year degrees.
