ELAC Badminton Bounces Back to Defeat Compton College 17-4

MONTEREY PARK, CA — The East Los Angeles College badminton team defeated Compton College 17-4 in South Coast Conference play today in the North Gym.

In earlier SCC action, the Huskies lost for the first time in six years (April 25, 2012) to El Camino College, 12-9. The Huskies were shut out 21-0 last week at the hands of defending state champion Pasadena City College.

Against Compton, Chinh Chu Lai (Mark Keppel High School), the lone sophomore on the ELAC team, won both her singles and doubles matches as did Haoyan (Alice) Zhang (Beijing / Chaoyang Foreign Language School) and Lingxuan (Cathy) Gu (Beijing / Chaoyang Foreign Language School).

Shouzheng “Carol” Zhang (Beijing / Chaoyang Foreign Language School) lost the closest match of the day, 21-15, 21-19 to freshman Marysol Mercado (Paramount HS), but bounced back to defeat Diana Gonzalez 21-4, 21-5.

Thuy Tran (Sierra Vista HS) and Xingming Hou (China / Changchun) split their singles matches.

NEXT UP

The Huskies (1-2) host El Camino College (2-1) on Friday, March 23 at 2 p.m. in a match for second place in the SCC standings.
