No. 1 Lady Huskies basketball wins 80-62

TORRANCE, CA — After winning its own tournament midseason, the Husky Classic, the No. 1-ranked East Los Angeles College women’s basketball team began 2017 with an 80-62 victory at El Camino College.

The Huskies compiled a 14-1 record in 2016 winning four of five tournaments. ELAC closes out its non-conference schedule next week with two more conference crossover games, one at home.

The Huskies, 15-1 overall, host Cerritos College (5-11) on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 6 p.m. and play Long Beach City College (9-8) at El Camino College on Friday, Jan. 13 at 8 p.m.

At El Camino, ELAC led 30-11 after the first period and 43-24 at the half.

Sophomore guard Tiffani Martinez (Montebello HS) scored a season-high 24 points, connecting on 8-of-15 three-point shots. Martinez connects on 40 per cent of her attempts from beyond the arc, 15th best in the state. It is the second out of three previous games Martinez has scored 20 or more points.

Sophomore center Gloria Ortiz (Roosevelt HS) had a game-high 14 rebounds. Ortiz averages 11.2 rebounds per game, 13th best in the state.

Sophomore guard Katrina Reeves (Orlando, FL / Dr. Phillips HS) came off the bench and scored a team-high 17 points, connecting on 50 percent of her attempts (7-of-14). She had three blocked shots and six rebounds, five off the offensive glass.

Freshman guard Farrah Castillo (Rowland High School) also scored in double figures with 10 points. She added five assists and had three steals. Sophomore guard Allissa Gomez (Roosevelt HS) had a game-high nine steals.  Gomez averages 2.8 steals per game, 23rd best in the state.

The Huskies begin South Coast Conference North Division play next week. The SCC North is the toughest conference in the state, based on having the best-combined records in the state, 75 wins and 18 losses.

Four teams are currently ranked in the state poll—No. 1 ELAC, No. 3 Mt. San Antonio College (17-1), No. 11 Pasadena City College (14-3) and No. 15 Los Angeles Trade Tech College (16-3). Conference newcomers this season include Chaffey College (9-8) and Rio Hondo College (4-12).
