East Los Angeles College Women’s Basketball Team wins 104-50

MONTEREY PARK, CA —  The East Los Angeles College women’s basketball team won a 104-50 contest against Imperial Valley College in the semifinals of the Susan and Dan Okawa Husky Classic Tournament.

It was the seventh time in five years that the Lady Huskies scored 100 or more points in a game.

The game began a close battle as the Huskies were adjusting to playing with a roster of eight. The first quarter had five lead changes and two ties. Imperial Valley built its largest lead of the game, 14-9, with 5:08 left in the frame.

ELAC closed the period with a 14-2 run, assisted by four 3-point shots, two each from sophomore guards Destinee Anaya (Irving, TX / MacArthur High School) and Kimberly Peraza (Downey HS). ELAC shot a total of 13 treys during the game.

Imperial Valley fought back to take a 29-27 lead with 5:18 left in the second quarter. The Huskies closed the half on a 19-0 run. ELAC led 46-29 and never looked back.

It was a total team effort. Five of eight Lady Huskies scored in double figures and the team had a total of 23 assists. ELAC stole the ball 24 times and held Imperial Valley to 35.9 percent shooting of all baskets (23-of-64).

Peraza connected on seven 3-pointers and scored a season-high 21 points. She led all scorers and had seven rebounds, two assists and five steals. Sophomore forward Monica Garcia (Garfield HS) scored 20 points, pulled down seven rebounds, had five assists and three steals.

Anaya scored 16 points and had a game-high five steals. Freshman forward Dominique Godbolt (Fairfax HS) scored 13 points, had eight rebounds with five of them off of the offensive glass, had three assists, two steals and the game’s only blocked shot. Freshman guard Jaelynn Curley (Ganado, AZ / Ganado HS) rounded out the double-digit scoring for ELAC with 13 points. She finished with four rebounds and three steals.

Sophomore forward Stevi Hall (Harrisburg, PA / Harrisburg HS) scored nine points, had four rebounds and two steals. Freshman forward Mercedes Ortiz (Garfield HS) scored eight points and finished with four assists and four steals. Freshman guard Jennifer Pool (Legacy HS) had six rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Two Imperial Valley freshmen scored in double figures, guard Ashley Gonder with 16 points and forward Destiny Salgado who scored 15.

ELAC (9-5) meets Los Angeles Harbor College (10-10) for the Consolation Championship tomorrow at 1 p.m.
