ELAC Women’s Basketball takes Consolation at Mission Tourney

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The East Los Angeles College women’s basketball team opened the season with the Consolation Championship with a 90-47 win over Los Angeles Harbor College, at the Mission College Tournament.

The tournament included four ranked teams from the CCCWBCA North Region Poll as well as ELAC who is ranked No. 8 in the South Region Poll. No. 8 Diablo Valley won the championship game 84-69 over No. 5 Sierra College. No. 24 Skyline took the Third Place Championship over host Mission College 58-41.

The Huskies lost 65-60 to Skyline College in the opening round and won an 84-54 game vs. De Anza College.

ELAC head coach Bruce Turner, coaching in his 13th season, played his entire 11-member team during each game.

In opening round action against Skyline, sophomore Dominique Godbolt (Fairfax High School) began the season with a double double with 14 points scored and 10 rebounds, 5 offensive boards glass. Godbolt recorded 19 double doubles last season. She averaged 13.2 rebounds per game, 5th best in the state from more than 900 women. Godbolt averaged 5 offensive rebounds, 6th best in the state.

The Lady Huskies fell behind 22-8 to Skyline after the first quarter and were behind as much as 20 points during the game. ELAC fought back and outscored Skyline 29-19 in the final 10 minutes. The comeback fell short in the five-point loss. The Huskies outrebounded Skyline 40-34 but shot 33.3% from the floor to 43.9% for Skyline.

Two other Huskies scored in double figures, returning veteran Jennifer Pool (Legacy HS) with 10 points and upstart freshman Valerie Godinez (St. Paul HS) also with 10. Pool had 6 steals, tops in the state. Last season Pool totaled 91 steals, 9th best in the state.
