ELAC Women’s Basketball opens Wild West tourney with 76-57 win

CULVER CITY, Calif. — No. 8 East Los Angeles College began play in the Wild West Shootout women’s basketball tournament with a convincing 76-57 win against No. 10 Los Angeles Valley College at “The Den” at West Los Angeles College.

“We played together as a team with a lot of intensity focusing on every possession,” said forward Breanna Hyde (Sherman Oaks CES). “We pressed on defense, which helped create offensive play because that’s how you win a game, with defense.”

Last week the Lady Huskies began the season in a tournament in Santa Clara that featured four ranked teams in the Top-16 North Region Preseason Poll. The Wild West Shootout includes six ranked teams from the South Region.

ELAC meets No. 12 El Camino College in the second of two championship semifinal games tomorrow at 7 p.m. The winner moves on to the championship game on Saturday at 3 p.m. The loser plays in the Third place Championship game, Saturday at noon.

Against Valley, the teams opened with five lead changes and four ties. The Lady Huskies finished the first quarter on a 6-0 run and led 20-12 entering the second. ELAC went on a 20-9 run in the next 10 minutes and led 40-21 at the half. ELAC led by as many as 27 points in the second half.

PAW TRACKS

Four Huskies scored in double figures led by guard Adriana Gonzalez (St. Paul High School) with 15 points. She knocked down three treys. Guard Dominique Godbolt (Fairfax HS) pumped in 14 points, guard Jaelynn Curley (AZ / Ganado HS) scored 11 with three 3-point baskets and Hyde added 10 points. ELAC was 6-of-6 at the free throw line hitting a perfect 100%.

On defense, forward Jadis Watson (Lancaster HS) brought down a game-high 8 rebounds, adding a game-high four steals. Hyde and Curley each had 6 rebounds. Hyde’s quickness led to 5 offensive rebounds. Four Lady Huskies smacked 5 blocked shots. Watson led ELAC with two and three guards each blocked one shot, Citlaly Davalos (Legacy HS), Valerie Godinez (St. Paul HS) and Taliyah Jones (Lancaster HS).

ELAC head coach Bruce Turner played his entire 11-member team for the fourth straight game. Each Husky averaged 18 minutes on the floor.
