ELAC women’s basketball wins second straight game over West Los Angeles

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — No. 8 East Los Angeles College defeated No. 14 West Los Angeles College for the second consecutive game, this time 76-67 in the first round of the Palomar College Comet Classic at ‘The Dome.’

ELAC beat West L.A. 79-55 six days ago on the Cougars’ court, ‘The Den,’ in the championship game of the Wild West Shootout. East vs. West was a hot rivalry a few years ago. ELAC holds a 3-0 edge since last year.

The Lady Huskies, 6-1 overall, faced an aggressive Cougars (3-4) team in the first quarter. After three lead changes and a tie, ELAC pulled out to a 18-13 lead at the end of the quarter. In the second quarter, the ELAC defense controlled the game forcing the Cougars to put up modest shots while outrebounding them 20-5. The Lady Huskies pulled away with a double-digit lead, 39-25, at the end of the physical first half, which included a combined 21 personal fouls.

West L.A. turned it up a notch in the second half and ELAC answered with the same, leading to a Huskies 65-47 lead at the end of three. West L.A. rallied in the final quarter and outshot ELAC a blistering 77.8% (7-of-9) to ELAC’s 27.3 (3-of-22). ELAC focused on their defense winning the game. The Lady Huskies outrebounded West L.A. 10-2 in the fourth quarter.

PAW TRACKS

Three Huskies scored in double digits, sophomore guard Dominique Godbolt (Fairfax HS), sophomore guard Jaelynn Curley (AZ / Ganado HS) and freshman Adriana Gonzalez (St. Paul HS).

Godbolt tallied her third double double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds of which nine were from the offensive boards. Curley scored 17 points, added eight rebounds, had four assists and two steals. Gonzalez came off the bench to pump in 11 points including three treys and had six rebounds.

Freshman forward Jadis Watson (Lancaster HS) had nine rebounds and a blocked shot. Sophomore guard Jennifer Pool (Legacy HS) had four assists and stole the ball six times. Pool averages 4.5 steals per game, sixth best in the state.
