ELAC women’s basketball takes third in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO Calif. — No. 6-state ranked East Los Angeles College won third place at the Golden Gate Classic Women’s Basketball Tournament with a 71-49 win against LA Valley College at City College of San Francisco.

“The Lady Huskies showed exceptional poise throughout the tournament,” said ELAC head coach Bruce Turner. “In the semifinals against San Francisco, the Lady Huskies were down by 21 points only to take the lead in the fourth quarter with a minute (and a half) remaining.” ELAC lost to No. 13 San Francisco 82-77.

“The Lady Huskies bounced back on Sunday to blow out the LA Valley Lady Monarchs,” said Turner. “Breanna Hyde led the scoring with 18 points, all in the first half.”

Sophomore forward Breanna Hyde (Sherman Oaks CES) was named to the Classic’s All-Tournament Team.  

Against Valley, the Lady Monarchs jumped out to a 4-0 lead less than a minute into the contest. ELAC caught them 8-8, 3 1/2 minutes later on a jump shot from Hyde who scored eight straight points. ELAC lead 22-16 after the first quarter. After on opening second quarter basket from Valley, ELAC went on a 15-0 run in 3 1/2 minutes and led by double digits for the remainder of the game.

Against San Francisco, the ELAC defense wasn’t up to par and ELAC fell behind 34-15 at the half. The Lady Huskies came back with a strong defense in the second half and took the lead with about 90 seconds left in the game. It was not enough and ELAC fell by five.

Against Santa Rosa, the pesky ELAC defense dictated play with Santa Rosa resulting in 18 turnovers and ELAC getting 53 rebounds. ELAC led 27-16 after the first quarter, 44-29 at the half and never looked back.

PAW TRACKS

Against Valley, Hyde added nine rebounds to her 18 points. Freshman guard Adriana Gonzalez (St. Paul HS) scored 16 points with three treys. Sophomore guard Jennifer Pool (Legacy HS) scored 12 and had six assists. Pool has the 15th best assists average-per-game in the state (5.0) and the 5th best average-per-game in steals (4.1).  

Against Santa Rosa, sophomore guard Jaelynn Curley (AZ / Ganado HS) scored 23 points seven three-point shots. She shot 70% from beyond the arc. Gonzalez scored 12 points and swished five three-point baskets. Freshman forward Jadis Watson (Lancaster HS) scored nine points.

Sophomore guard Dominique Godbolt (Fairfax HS) had a game-high 20 rebounds, scored nine points and had three steals. Pool had a game-high seven assists and had three steals. 

UP NEXT 

ELAC hosts its annual basketball tournament, the Owaka Classic, Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 27 to 29 in the South Gym. The Lady Huskies meet Imperial Valley at 5 p.m. on Dec. 27. 

Games times are at 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Sunday.
