Balanced Huskies' Effort Outpaces Trade Tech

Coming off a tough loss to Long Beach City, East Los Angeles (15-6) looked to return to its winning ways as it began SCC-North play by hosting rival LA Trade Tech (13-8). Using it's patented grind-it-out style, a balanced offensive attack and timely three-point shooting, ELAC maintained control throughout to earn a 65-56 win over its LACCD rival. Maria Martinez lead ELAC's with 14 points, five rebounds and three assists. Jadin Lacount scored 13 points with 11 rebounds and two blocks, and Citlaly Davalos chipped in 11 points while also grabbing 11 boards. Reserves Maya Clark and Ryan Terry each scored nine points, and although second-leading team scorer Delilah Kimble-Gray struggled from the field (2-9 FGs, six points) she grabbed six boards and dished a team-high nine assists.

The Huskies established themselves in the first quarter in part thanks to outside sharpshooting; four of their seven field goal makes in the period came from outside the arc, and they hit on four of their first five three-point attempts en route to a 21-14 advantage. The second quarter saw both ELAC and LATTC struggle shooting - both teams shot a combined 7-30 from the field as each team scored just 10 points. In the third quarter, the Huskies would push their lead up to 12, but a trio of Beaver layups halved the lead sliced the lead in half, and a three-point play by Kierra Haynes (15 points, 15 rebounds) trimmed the lead to three. But East Los Angeles would close the quarter on a 7-0 run to lead 51-41 going into the final period. The Huskies would stretch their lead to as much as 17, and held a 65-49 lead with 2:39 left. Trade Tech would then mount a last-gasp 7-0 run but ran out of time.

HUSKY BITS

• Martinez buried back-to-back three-pointers in the 4th quarter to give the Huskies a 16-point lead midway through the period. She would make four of seven threes for the game.
• Terry's nine points all came on three-pointers (3 of 6 3FGs).
• ELAC held a 52-46 advantage on the boards. They also had 18 assists on 25 made field goals.
