East LA Finishes Seventh-Best in State, "Super Six" All Place in Top Ten.

With the return of the CCCAA State Wrestling Championships last week at Cerritos, the East Los Angeles College Wrestling program once again sent a congregation of its players, the Pack hunting for another strong finish to cap off a successful season and return to the mats after the 2020 Covid layoff. ELAC's "Super Six": Troy Garza, Hector Ramirez, Josue Aguilar, Nick Lopez, Devin Perries and Nathan Ramos, earned entry into the Championships and looked to come home with hardware and a top-ten team finish.

 

Mission accomplished.

 

All six wrestlers placed within the top-ten of their weight classes, and ELAC finished the 2021 season as the seventh-best team in all of California.

Here's how each of the six finalists fared:

 

  • Troy Garza, 184 lbs
    Finished in 5th Place.
  • Hector Ramirez, 141 lbs
    Finished in 8th Place.
  • Josue Aguilar, 149 lbs
    Finished in 4th Place, earned CCCAA All-American Honors.
    • note: Aguilar finished 8that the 2019 State Championships.
  • Nick Lopez, 174 lbs
    Finished in 6th Place.
  • Devin Peries, 197 lbs
    Finished in 8th Place.
  • Nathan Ramos, 285 lbs
    Finished in 8th Place.

 

First-year head coach Miguel Soto beamed with pride as he spoke about the performance of his finalists. "It's hard to sum up this incredible season in just a few words," explained Coach Soto. "The pack finished in 7th place as a team at the CCCAA State Wrestling Championships, which was nothing short amazing."

Soto then spoke of the impact of the team's success this season and what it means:

"The boys displayed incredible resilience and drive which showed throughout the season and this past weekend. Physical wrestling aside, these young men truly lived up to the spirit of the sport. As wrestling is not only training your body in the wrestling room, but also your mind within everyday life. The team's constant willfulness to learn, acceptance of constructive criticism and adaptability speak highly of their character. They truly model the values, that we at East Los Angeles, hope to build in within this program. We couldn't have been more proud to have coach such a great group of men!"

 

HUSKY BITS:

  • Hall of Famer and Retired former Huskies head coach Ralph Valle was in attendance, and said that the program has never had as many wrestlers finish as State placers as this year's squad.
    • Valle also stated the team's 7th place finish (56 points) was the highest in the program's history.
  • Mt. San Antonio College won the overall state team title with 159 total points.

UP NEXT

Coach Soto will have the benefit of a full offseason recruiting and development program as the team concludes a successful return to competition.

Women's wrestling - currently a club sport - will look to start up in the spring and continue their push to join the men as an official sanctioned sport in the near-future.
