ELAC women's soccer streak ended by No. 1 Cerritos

NORWALK, Calif. — The East Los Angeles College Huskies women’s soccer team had its longest win streak since 2015—three games—snapped by the No. 1 team in the state, Cerritos College.

It took an undefeated Cerritos (15-0) to hand the Huskies their first loss since October 9th, 4-0. Cerritos won their fifth consecutive CCCAA State Championship two years ago and was National Champion four of those years.

They gave ELAC little reason to doubt that they could return to center stage this year after taking a 3-0 first period lead with goals from Natalie Garcia (assist Claudia Paz) in the 23rd minute, Serena Camacho (Elizabeth Mendez) in the 32nd minute and Valeria Corrilo (Sydney Carr) in the 38th minute. The Falcons fourth goal was from Carr (assist Corrilo) in the 85th minute.

ELAC had an excellent strong attack but just couldn’t find the net. The Huskies did a better job against Cerritos than most teams as fourteen of Cerritos’ wins have been by shut-out with an average score of 7-0 in favor of Cerritos.

Cerritos had 14 shots on goal to ELAC’s five. Three ELAC freshman took those shots, Crystal Gonzalez (Roosevelt HS) hammered three shots and Perla Navarro (Fremont HS) and Julianne Garcia (Los Altos HS) each shot one.

ELAC goalkeeper Adriana Huerta (South East High School) had 10 saves. Falcon goalkeeper Deisy Rodriguez had five saves, two of them in the second period, one from Garcia, which were ELAC’s best opportunities to score.

This is the fourth South Coast Conference crossover game in 12 days for the Huskies. ELAC falls to 5-6-3 overall after getting to an even .500 record on Friday with a 5-0 shut-out win at Compton.

UP NEXT

The Huskies have a big test against Rio Hondo (10-13) in Whittier on Friday at 4 p.m. The Huskies will have to return to familiar territory, needing an upset to win. ELAC is on the cusp for a playoff bid and a win over Rio Hondo will go a long way in staying alive for such bid.

Rio Hondo is located at 3600 Workman Mill Rd, Whittier, CA 90601.
