ELAC Swim and Dive Get 10 Personal Records in Double Dual Loss
TORRANCE, CA — The East Los Angeles College women’s swim and dive team competed in its second South Coast Conference double dual meet of the season but came away with two losses.
For the first time since swimming returned to ELAC seven years ago after an absence of 10 years, the Huskies lost to crosstown rival Los Angeles Trade Tech College. Trade Tech outscored ELAC 147.5 to 117.5. Both teams lost to host El Camino College. The Huskies sport a freshman laden team with just one sophomore.
Trade Tech scored the win in the final two events. In the penultimate event, the 200-yard individual medley, Trade Tech placed second and third while ELAC placed fourth and fifth. Lizbeth Perez (Orthopedic Hospital Medical Magnet HS) placed fourth with a personal record and Kellie Ton (Mark Keppel HS) placed fifth.
Trade Tech led 88.5 to 87.5 entering the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay and outscored ELAC 52-30 with strategy because they entered two relay teams instead of one.
ELAC’s 400 freestyle medley won first place with a personal record with Caitlin Woo (Mark Keppel HS) in the first leg, followed by sophomore Crystal Rubalcava (Schurr HS), Elizabeth Melendrez (Mark Keppel HS) and Vicky Zia-Lopez (Mark Keppel HS) in the final leg. ELAC continues to improve as seven Huskies totaled 10 personal records.
Woo won the 200-yard backstroke by more than 16 seconds with a personal record. She took second place in the 200-yard free.
ELAC placed second in the 200-yard medley relay—Woo in the backstroke, Zia-Lopez in the breaststroke, Melendrez in the butterfly and Rubalcava in the final freestyle leg.
Melendrez took second place in the 100-yard fly with a personal record. She placed second in the 200-individual medley as well. Rubalcava finished fourth in the 100-fly with a personal record and took an impressive third place in the 1,000-meter free.
Perez touched the wall in third place in the 100-yard breaststroke and also the 100-yard back. Perez place fourth in the 200 IM with a personal record.
Zia-Lopez placed fourth in the 1-meter diving event with a personal record of 89.5 points. She placed an important third place in the 100-breastroke as the only Husky entry. Ton had a personal record in the 200 back and took fourth place in the 100 back.
Daniela Pastor (South Gate HS) competed in three individual events and had a personal record in the 100 free. Michelea Esparza (Los Angeles HS) had two personal records in her second straight meet. Today she had them in the 50-yard free and the 100 free.

The Huskies compete in an SCC double dual meet against Pasadena City and Chaffey colleges on Friday at the PCC College Aquatics Center.
