East Los Angeles College volleyball loses to ranked teams

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. — East Los Angeles College lost to two perennial powerhouses this weekend, 3-0 to No. 24-state ranked Mira Costa College today and 3-0 to No. 3 El Camino College yesterday.

The Huskies put up a good fight against Mira Costa (8-2) in the Chaffey Quad today but lost 25-23, 25-16, 25-18. It was the fourth straight shutout loss to Mira Costa in four years. Glendale Community College, ELAC’s other opponent in the Quad, who the Huskies were attempting to beat for the third straight year, was a no show.

Against El Camino at home last night, the Huskies lost 25-11, 25-23, 25-18. With the two losses, ELAC drops under .500 for the first time this season at 5-6 overall. El Camino improves to 8-1.

PAW TRACKS: Against Mira Costa, each team hit .229, however, the Huskies had 25 kills to 44 for Mira Costa. Sophomore outside hitter Yicel Quintero (South Gate HS) scored from a team-high nine kills and a team-high three service aces. Freshman setter Samantha Villarreal (Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary HS) had a team-high 10 assists for the Huskies while freshman outside hitter Arianna Gomez (California HS) had a team-high 10 digs.

The Huskies had 10 blocked solos, Mira Costa had none. Four Huskies each blocked two shots—freshman right side hitter Jimena Gonzalez Robles (Lynwood HS), freshman outside hitter Ryley Rhamy (California HS) and sophomore middle hitters Kayla Dickerson (Bell Gardens HS) and Daija Walton (Perris HS).

Against El Camino, Quintero and Walton smashed a team-high eight kills apiece. Quintero hit them with a clip of.333. Sophomore right side hitter Rachel Cruz (Garfield HS) had a team-high 14 assists. Villareal had 13 assists and hit a game-high three service aces. Sophomore defensive specialist Victoria Trejo-Garcia (Downey HS) had a game-high 15 digs.

UP NEXT: The Huskies travel to meet their crosstown rival Los Angeles Trade Tech College on Wednesday, Sept. 26 in Laurel Gymnasium beginning at 6 p.m.
