Water Polo finishes sixth

MONTEREY PARK, Calif.—The East Los Angeles College water polo team ended its season with a sixth place finish in the South Coast Conference Tournament on Saturday Nov. 7 at Cerritos College.

Long Beach City College (19-9) upset Mt. San Antonio College (22-5) 8-6 for its first SCC title since 2010.

Host Cerritos stunned the third-seed and defending champion Chaffey College, 9-8, in the third place game.

ELAC had SCC wins against rival Rio Hondo, 11-10, and El Camino College, 16-4, to finish the SCC dual meet season also in sixth place.

Combined with their sixth place finish in SCC Dual Meets, the Huskies took sixth place in the final SCC standings.

The Huskies (4-21) lost the fifth place game in to Pasadena City College (14-12), 11-3.

Freshman Alejandra Mendoza (South Gate High School) scored two Husky goals off assists by sophomore Brandy Macias (Bell Gardens HS). Macias scored the other ELAC goal from an assist by freshman Michelle Delgado (Montebello HS).

ELAC played great on defense with 13 steals. Sophomore Yvonne Young (Mark Keppel HS) led the ELAC with five steals. Macias had three steals. Sophomore Stephanie Perez (Roosevelt HS) and freshman Reanna Calvaruzo each had two steals with Mendoza adding one.

Freshman goalie Krystal Ramirez (Montebello HS) played her best game against Pasadena with 10 saves. ELAC previously lost to Pasadena twice this season.

ELAC lost to Chaffey College 16-5 in the opening quarterfinal round on Nov. 6.

Macias scored three goals. Mendoza and Delgado each scored one goal. Assists were by Young, Perez and Calvaruzo. The Huskies had 11 steals, four each from Young and Macias and three from Calvaruzo. Ramirez had seven saves.

Macias led the Huskies on offense this year with 29 goals from 35 attempts and 14 assists. Mendoza scored 28 goals from 43 attempts. Calvaruzo scored 18 goals and Young scored 16 goals and had a team-leading 19 assists. Delgado scored 13 goals this year.

Young led the Huskies defense with 97 steals this year. Macias had 53 steals, Calvaruzo had 17, freshman Julia Soto had nine, Perez had eight, Mendoza had seven, Delgado had five and sophomore Alex Reyes had three total steals this season.
