ELAC water polo splashes to 19-3 win

SAN DIEGO, CA — The East Los Angeles College water polo team won a rematch against Southwestern College, 19-3, in the San Diego Mesa Tournament.

The Huskies bounced back from an early season 15-9 loss to the Jaguars.

ELAC lead 5-1 after the first period, which included two goals from freshman defender Cynthia Sanchez (Schurr High School), one unassisted and the other assisted by freshman attacker Sophia Gonzalez (Harvard Westlake HS).

The Huskies shut out the Jaguars in the second period 3-0. Sanchez scored two of the three goals, one unassisted and the other assisted by sophomore goalkeeper Krystal Ramirez (Montebello HS).

ELAC outscored the Jaguars 8-2 in the third period and increased its lead to 13-3.

Gonzales scored four goals for the Huskies, one unassisted, two assisted by Ramirez and one assisted by freshman attacker Irene Young (Mark Keppel HS).

The Huskies added three more goals in the fourth frame, two from freshman center Jessenia Barberena (Mark Keppel HS) both assisted by freshman attacker Elsie Morales (Bell Gardens HS).

Sanchez scored a game-high seven goals, Sanchez and Barberena added three each, Morales and Young scored two each and freshman attacker Lesley Perez (Schurr HS) scored one goal.

Chelsea Samperio scored two goals for Southwestern.

Ramirez, who has 121 saves this season – third best in the state – had five saves today.

ELAC returns to South Coast Conference play next week with a home game vs. Pasadena City College on Monday at 3 p.m.

The Huskies travel to crosstown rival LA Trade Tech on Wednesday, Oct. 5 for a 3 p.m. game.
