ELAC water polo defeats rival, 17-1
LOS ANGELES,CA — The East Los Angeles College water polo team won its first South Coast Conference game with a 17-1 victory against crosstown rival Los Angeles Trade Tech College today.
ELAC moves to 1-5 in SCC play while LA Trade Tech falls to 1-4. Mt. San Antonio, Cerritos and Long Beach City colleges are each undefeated in SCC action.
LA Trade Tech, El Camino and Pasadena City colleges are deadlocked for fifth place. Tied for eighth place in the standings are ELAC and Rio Hondo.
ELAC hosts El Camino on Wednesday Oct. 12 at 3 p.m. A win would be ELAC’s third in 11 days.
Against Trade Tech, the Huskies scored 10 first period goals, four from freshman attacker Elsie Morales (Bell Gardens High School) and three from freshman attacker Sophia Gonzalez (Harvard Westlake HS).
Freshman center Jessenia Barberena (Mark Keppel HS) scored two first quarter goals for ELAC.
Freshman attacker Crystal Rubalcava (Schurr HS) scored her first goal of the year for the Huskies off an assist from Gonzalez in the first period.
Rubalcava added another goal before the second period expired, assisted by Morales, to put the Huskies up 13-1.
Freshman attacker Martha Villanueva (South East HS) scored her second goal of the season during the third period and ELAC led 15-1 after three frames.
Gonzales and Morales each scored a game-high five goals. Other Husky goals not mentioned included one each from sophomore Julia Soto (Garfield HS) and freshman defender Cynthia Sanchez (Schurr HS).
The Huskies had 16 steals. Freshman attacker Irene Young (Mark Keppel HS) had a game-high four steals while Gonzalez and Sanchez seized three steals each. Soto and Barberena had two steals each.
Freshman attacker Lesley Perez (Schurr HS) and Rubalcava each recorded their first steals of the season for ELAC.
Gonzalez led with Husky assists with five total and Morales added two. Adding one assist each were Soto, Rubalcava, Young, Villanueva, Sanchez, Barberena and sophomore goalkeeper Krystal Ramirez (Schurr HS).
Ramirez had nine saves. She totals 141 saves this season, 6th-best in the state.
