Ramirez and Calle Grab State Titles as Huskies Finish Third Overall

East Los Angeles College Women's Wrestling turned in another bronze effort as the team placed third overall at the 3C2A State Championships in Sacramento. It's the second straight year that ELAC finished third.

Eight Huskies placed in the Top Ten for their weight classes. For the second straight year, the Huskies had two wrestlers win individual state titles in their respective weight class.

Freshman Mia Ramirez finished off a 7-0 individual season (five wins by pinfall) by defeating Satira Sohal of Cerritos (M. For.) for the state crown at 116lbs.

Sophomore Izzy Calle repeats as #1 in 220lbs by pinning Atziry Chavez of Sacramento City (Fall 1:34). Capping a 4-0 individual season, she is the first wrestler (male or female) in the history of East Los Angeles College to repeat as a State Champion.

Here's the Huskies' first and second runners-up:

Ariana Valdivia moved up from 128lbs to 136lbs for her sophomore campaign, and went 14-3 on the season. She notches her second silver finish as State Runner-Up.

Sophomore Galilea Garcia-Salazar went 7-7 on the season. Last year's State Runner-Up earned a bronze finish this year by pinning Evelyn Garcia of Fresno City (Fall 1:40) in the Third Place Match.

And for the other placers:

  • Freshman AJ Guizar placed fourth in the 128lb bracket
  • Freshmen Mollie Jimenez (109lbs), Alex Zia-Lopez (220lb) and sophomore Delilah Felix-Lopez (123lb) all placed sixth in their respective weight classes.

ELAC scored 120.5 points overall, narrowly losing out to Mt. SAC for second place. Cerritos College repeated as overall State Champions.

Head coach Angel Solis was very pleased with his team's performance. "They wrestled awesome," said Solis, "They did everything we've been working on."

Coach Solis added that said performance would have been even better if not for a couple of injuries. "We got sidetracked [with those], but performance-wise, they were on. Not disappointed at all."

  • Now with having wrapped up another successful season, it's once again time to hit the recruiting trail. Solis believes the back-to-back third place finishes will impress top area high-school talent. "We've already begun talking to some kids," states Solis.
  • Finishing as back-to-back #3 in the state only means Coach is ready to take aim at overtaking Mt. SAC and Cerritos next season. "We'll be moving up in the rankings," exclaims Solis.
