Women’s Cross Country Gets Best Times

FULLERTON, CA — For the second straight meet, the East Los Angeles College women’s cross country team each ran personal records, this week at the CSU Fullerton Titan Invitational.

The Huskies continue to improve in what was their final meet before the regular season ending South Coast Conference Championships.

The Huskies competed against mostly four-year university competition in Fullerton and didn’t score because they sport a four-woman team instead of five.

Loyola Marymount University was the fastest NCAA Division I team while the top three Non-Division I teams were Cal Coast, Riverside Community College and Vanguard University.

The Huskies ran individual personal best times by an average of one minute and seven seconds each.

Sophomore Sylvia Calvache (Rancho Mirage High School) led the Huskies pack with a time of 20:23.2. Calvache sprinted at the finish line and edged Santa Ana College freshman Monique Azpeitia by 1.4 seconds.

Freshman Daisy Ortiz (Warren HS) ran a personal best in 22:40.6 and was fast enough to edge La Sierra University senior Brittany Lynch at the finish line.

Freshman Alejandra Martinez (Bell HS) finished in 23:06.4 and sprinted 1.8 seconds faster than La Sierra University sophomore Jackie Hernandez.

Freshman Chelsea Sanchez-Flores (Garfield HS) ran 1:33.4 faster than her previous best time and finished in 23:33.4.

Mt. SAC Invitational

At the Mt. SAC Invitational last Saturday, Calvache bested her previous fastest time by more than two minutes and placed 26th out of 100 women from Southern California with a time of 21:06.5.

Ortiz finished in 23:34.0 sprinting madly in the final 100-meters and crossed the finish line 2/100th’s of a second faster than Chaffey College freshman Natasha Hurt.

Ortiz’s personal record at Mt. SAC was two minutes and 22 seconds faster than her previous best time.

Alejandra Martinez kept a pace with enough sprint left to finish in 24:23.3 good enough to finish ahead of Santa Monica freshman Maria Martinez.

Sanchez-Flores finished in 23:33.4. She knocked off 1:27.4 off her previous fastest time.

The Huskies end their regular season at the SCC Championships next Friday, Oct. 27, at Mt. SAC with a 10 a.m. start time.

The Huskies will fight to continue their season with a bid to the Southern California Championships at Central Park in Santa Clarita on Friday, Nov. 3.
