John Mosley- ELAC Men’s Basketball Head Coach

Once a Husky, always a Husky: Named one of 50 Most Impactful Coaches in JUCO Men’s Basketball, head coach and alumnus John Mosley returns to East Los Angeles College for his 12th season as Head Men’s Basketball Coach. He enters the 2023-24 season with a 241-59 record during his tenure in Huskies’ green, and has led the program to eleven-straight CCCAA State Playoff appearances. He's also steered the program to seven-straight SCC-North conference titles (outright or shared) and eight titles out of the last nine seasons. East LA has made three appearances in the State Championships (2015, 2017, 2023) and were the 2015 champion runner-ups. Coach Mosley and his ELAC men's basketball program were also featured in two seasons of Netflix's critically-acclaimed, Emmy Award-winning sports docu-series Last Chance U. In that first season of LCU: Basketball, the world witnessed the Huskies boarding the bus to head to the 2020 State Championship, only to be tearfully forced off the bus when the championship games were canceled due to Covid-19. The 2022-23 season, however, saw the Pack finally get back on that bus.

With SCC-North Player of the Year JT Langston leading the way, East LA secured another conference championship and grinded their way to the State semifinals. Seven Huskies were named to the All-Conference team, with Coach Mosley earning his seventh-straight Coach of the Year nod as the team amassed a 27-4 record. Unfortunately, the team's championship campaign ended one game shy of of their goal, losing in the 3C2A State semifinal game to eventual champion Fullerton College.

The 2021-22 season held plenty of challenges as Coach Mosley and his program navigated the first post-Covid season. Rostering a young team with many new faces and loads of talent, East LA still held onto South Coast Conference-North dominance. With Cory Cofield earning Player of the Year, the Pack had five selections to the All-Conference team as Coach Mosley was awarded his sixth-straight Coach of the Year award. The Huskies beat visiting Cerritos College in the second round of the CCCAA Playoffs, but lost at West LA College in the regional finals.

Mosley’s Huskies arguably enjoyed their best season in ELAC history during the 2019-20 campaign. The team had their eyes on the CCCAA State Title, entering the Championship Tournament with a program-best 29-1 record while being ranked the second-best team in the state – ELAC’s highest CCCMBCA ranking ever. The Huskies won the South Coast Conference-North title for the fifth straight year while dominating all sorts of conference honors: Freshman forward Kealen (KJ) Allen was named SCC-North Player of the Year while Coach Mosley earned his fifth SCC-North Coach of the Year award; four Huskies were named to the All-SCC North first team and another to the conference’s second team. Mosley also was named the 2019-2020 SCC Fall Men’s Coach of the Year, the second time he’s earned the honor (2013-14). Nine Huskies successfully matriculated to 4-year universities from this season’s squad.

The Huskies, the #3-seed in the CCCAA South Region, rode a school-record 25 game winning streak into the State Championships before the games were canceled due to onset of COVID-19.

During the 2018-19 season, the Huskies again mushed into the CCCAA State Playoffs with three Elite Eight appearances and Championship Game appearance under their belt.  Mosley’s Huskies won the SCC-North for the fourth straight season. Forward Solomon Hunt was named conference Player of the Year, with Mosley named Coach of the Year - the fourth time Mosley has received such an honor.  Seven Huskies from the '18-19 squad successfully matriculated to 4-year universities.

For the 2017-18 run, the Huskies claimed yet another SCC title and reached the CCCAA State Playoffs for the sixth consecutive season. In addition, Roderick Williams earned his second MVP, with Mosley earning his third Coach of the Year award. Six Huskies from the '17-18 squad successfully matriculated to 4-year universities.

In 2016-17 The Huskies reached the CCCAA State Elite Eight, back-to-back South Coast Conference Champions and Mosley was honored as back-to-back Coach of the year.  Midway through this season, Mosley reached the 100-win milestone in just four-and-a-half seasons.  Five Huskies on the 2016-17 squad successfully matriculated to 4-year universities.

In the 2015-16 season, the Huskies were destined to make history again with a 26-4 record, the school’s best ever at the time.  Under Mosley, the Huskies claimed the South Coast Conference Championship and Mosley was named SCC Coach of the Year. The Huskies were ranked as high as #2 in the CCAAA Coach’s Poll and marched all the way to the Elite-Eight in their fourth consecutive visit to the CCAAA State playoffs.  Six Huskies on the 2015-16 squad successfully matriculated to 4-year universities.

The 2014-2015 season was one of the most magical seasons in ELAC History with Mosley at the helm.  The Huskies made their third trip to the CCCAA State Tournament as a modest #13-seed - a modern day Cinderella run.  The 22-11 Huskies first hushed all doubters by winning a play-in game for a tourney birth. Then, the Huskies continued to win five straight games to reach The California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) State Championship game (1st time in ELAC's 70 year history).  The run was unfortunately ended by Saddleback College as the Gauchos squeezed out a 50-47 win, leaving ELAC the 2014-2015 CCCAA State Finalist.  Mosley also saw four sophomores named All-South Coast Conference, two players named to the CCCAA State All-Tournament Team and one named to the CCCAA All-State Team. Seven Huskies on the 2014-15 squad successfully matriculated to 4-year universities.

In 2013-2014, Mosley's Huskies were the South Coast Conference (SCC) Champions for the first time in over 42 years, finishing with another 20 win season (20-9) and a CCCAA State playoff berth.  Coach  Mosley was named the SCC Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year and 2013-2014 SCC Men’s Sports Coach of The Year.  In another first, a Husky was named SCC Player of The Year: PAC-12 bound Aaron Cheatum. He also made the CCCAA All-State Team along with three others who were named First Team All-South Coast Conference.

In Mosley’s first season at ELAC the Huskies recorded a remarkable 21-8 record and their 1st trip to the CCCAA state playoffs in over a decade.  In addition he saw four sophomores named All-South Coast Conference and one named to the prestigious CCCAA All-State Team.

In the 2012-13 season, the Huskies ranked as high as #7 in the CCCAA State coaches poll which was also a first in ELAC history.

Before his time coaching the Huskies, Mosley spent five years at NCAA Division-I California State University Bakersfield as assistant Men’s Basketball Coach for Keith Brown.  Mosley was the recruiting coordinator and instrumental in the program’s Division I transition.  He also taught in the Kinesiology Department at CSUB.   Before CSUB, Mosley spent eight years at his alma mater The Master’s College as assistant coach for the legendary Bill Oates.  While coaching at the Master’s, his team recorded 152-97 while capturing two berths to the NAIA nationals elite eight and sweet sixteen.  Mosley also served as Director of Marketing for athletics and taught six years in the Kinesiology Department.

As an athlete, Mosley was a local product staring at Washington Prep High School in Basketball and Track.  After high school, he made the choice to attend ELAC; as the two year team captain and starting point guard, Mosley led the Huskies into the playoffs, accumulated two All-Conference honors and earned an All-State honorable mentioned while leading the entire state of California in assists (11.1).  Mosley transferred to The Master’s College where he led his team to two regional championships and two NAIA Div I national tournament appearances.  In 2004 Mosley was inducted into the hall of fame at TMC.  After college he enjoyed a professional stint in Australia and Brazil.  Mosley holds an AA degree in Liberal Arts from ELAC, BA in Kinesiology from The Master’s College and a MA in Education and studied Physical Education at Azusa Pacific University.

Mosley and his wife La Shaunda have three children: Jackson, Moriah and Leah.  Mosley has a fulltime faculty assignment for the Kinesiology Department and also works with The Male Leadership Academy at ELAC, a program that supports the vision of underrepresented Men of Color and supports their success at the Community College.
