ELAC men's soccer wins 2-1 in the 89th minute

COMPTON, Calif. — The East Los Angeles College men's soccer team won 2-1 at Compton College in a South Coast Conference crossover game. The Huskies scored the winning shot in the final 80 seconds.

ELAC improves to 4-9-2 overall and defeated Compton (2-9-2) for the first time since 2015.

With the game tied 1-1 nearing the final minute and heading towards a draw, ELAC freshman Alberto Gutierrez (Huntington Park High School) received the ball from freshman Alexis Arroyo (Maywood Academy HS) and took it down the right line around a defender and crossed it to sophomore forward Jerson Maravilla (Fremont HS).

Maravilla knocked it off the inside goal and ELAC led with 80 ticks left on the clock. The game winning shot by Maravilla was officially assisted by Arroyo and Gutierrez.

After a scoreless first period, Compton scored in the 56th minute (55:03) for a 1-0 lead. Compton freshman forward Alfredo Trujillo (Bell HS) goal was assisted by freshman forward Jose Rodriguez (Lynwood HS).

The Huskies scored the equalizer on an unassisted goal by Paulo Macedo (State School Hermelina De Albuquerque Passarella) in the 60th minute.

ELAC smashed six shots on goal, three from Maravilla, who had four total shots, and one each from Macedo, Gutierrez and Sergio Chaidez. Sophomore Alexander Silva (Roosevelt HS) blasted three shots.

Compton had nine shots on goals, two each from Trujillo, Rodriguez, freshman defender Jesus Gutierrez (Long Beach Wilson HS) and freshman defender Adonis Arevalo (Daniel Pearl Magnet HS).

Next week, the Huskies play two state-ranked teams on the road. ELAC plays at No. 1 Cerritos College (11-1-2) on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 4 p.m. and at No. 10 Rio Hondo (9-2-5), Friday, Oct. 23 at 6 p.m.
