SCC Badminton Championships results

MANHATTAN BEACH, CA — For the first time in 10 years, each college of the South Coast Conference advanced representatives to the CCCAA Badminton State Championships out of the SCC Individual Championships today at the Manhattan Beach Badminton Club.

East Los Angeles College, the defending state doubles champions, sends its No. 1 doubles team to the State Championships. The duo of sophomore Jean Mornelle Buenaflor (South El Monte HS) and freshman Quan Zhang (China / Beihai HS) advances to as the SCC’s No. 3-seed.

“It is great Jean (Mornelle Buenaflor) returns to state in singles and doubles,” said ELAC Coach Qui Nguy. “She advances with Quan (Zhang) in doubles.”

Buenaflor was last year’s Individual Consolation Singles title winner and advances in singles as the SCC’s No. 6-seed and is 17-4 overall.

Pasadena City College dominated the today and sends five singles players and four doubles teams to the state finals, May 12-13 at Mission College in Santa Clara.

ECC Compton Center, which hosted the SCC finals, sends two to the State Championships for the first time since 2007 when they sent two singles players and a double’s team. Compton sophomores Amanda Palacios and Olga Pardo enter the state doubles competition as this year’s No. 6-seed from the SCC.

El Camino College sends two freshmen to state in singles competition, Samoen Kong, the SCC No. 7-seed and Phoebe Torres, the SCC’s No. 8-seed.

“Today the standards were as good as they were last year,” said Nguy.

The ELAC doubles team of sophomore Chris Peijie Li (Beijing, China / Chao Yang Foreign Language School) and sophomore Liting Wu (Fushui, China / Fushuierzhong HS) were all smiles after winning a huge upset against favored El Camino College.

Li’s height helped her reached shots that looked impossible to defend. Li and Liting responded quickly to fast shots throughout the match.

“We work very hard and I have improved this year in both singles and doubles. Together with Liting we worked as a team in the doubles win,” said Li.
