ELAC Women’s T&F Opens with Two Meets this Month

NORWALK, CA — The East Los Angeles College women’s track and field team opened the season with two meets this month including the Cerritos Open today and the Soka Indoor Qualifier.

The Indoor Qualifier at the Soka University Track Complex was ELAC’s first indoor track and field meet in more than 25 years. The Huskies cancelled their trip this month to compete in the Rossi Relays at the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.

ELAC sports an all-freshmen team and posted two personal records today in the 800-meter run. Sylvia Calvache (Rancho Mirage High School) and Jazmin Romero (Roosevelt HS) each trimmed three seconds off their previous best times.

Calvache took second place in her heat in her initial race this season of the 1,500-meter run edging a Mt. SAC runner at the finish line in more than three seconds. Calvache placed 12th overall in a field of 30 women. Calvache placed 7th in the 3,000-meter run today passing a Mt. SAC runner in the final lap and leaving her in the dust at the finish line by more than 14 seconds.

Cameron Chang (South Pasadena HS) sprinted at the finish line and crossed it 89/100’s of a second faster than Palomar’s Alexis Morales.

Daisy Ortiz (Warren HS) took second place in her heat in the 800-run over Gabrielle Mendoza 2:40.05 to 2:40.48. Ortiz took eighth place in her heat in a field of 17 in the 1500 run over a runner from San Bernardino Valley College.

In the Soka Indoor Qualifier, the Huskies competed against mostly four-year university women. Alejandra Martinez (Bell HS), who placed fifth in her heat, defeated Selina Lewis of Vanguard University.

Yesenia Carias (Los Angeles HS) defeated teammate Romero and placed fifth in her heat of the 800 run.
