Huskies Women’s Track & Field Competes Against 4-Year University Competition

Redlands, CA — The East Los Angeles College women’s track and field team held their own against four-year university competition at the Redlands Invite today and the CSULA Invite last week.

Freshman Cameron Chang (South Pasadena HS), the only short distance sprinter on the team, placed sixth in her 200-meter dash in the Redlands Invite, held at the Ashel Cunningham Track on the University of Redlands campus. She ran a personal record and finished ahead of Cal State LA senior Antonique Newson-Henry in a photo-like finish, 31.07 to 31.51.

Chang finished with another personal record, this one in the 400-meter hurdles with a third-place finish in her heat.

Freshman Daisy Ortiz (Warren HS) placed 10th in her heat of the 800-meter run just ahead of a junior and a senior from Chapman University. Calvache place mid-pack in a field of 22 in the 1,500-meter run ahead of three runners from powerhouse San Bernardino Valley College.

In the 800-run, freshman Yesenia Carias (Los Angeles HS) darted in front of Riverside City College freshman Rebecca Hernandez at the finish line and won by just over a second.

In the Cal State LA Invitational at the Jesse Owens Track & Field Stadium, Calvache competed in her last 3,000-meter run, which is a non-competitive event in the post season and the regular season ending South Coast Conference Championships. She placed ninth in a field of 14, breezing by Biola University freshman Lawsen Taylor in the last lap finishing in front by 10 seconds. Calvache moves on to the 5,000-meter run event next week.

Carias ran a personal record in the Cal State LA Invite, as did Ortiz in the 1500. Freshman Jazmin Romero (Roosevelt HS) edged Carias for sixth place in the 800-run.
