Huskies Women’s Track & Field Gets PRs in Meet of 2,200 Athletes

LONG BEACH, CA — The Huskies women’s track and field team ran personal records against the nation’s elite at the Beach Invitational at the Cal State Long Beach Jack Rose Track.

The Beach Invitational had more than 2,200 athletes compete, which included World Champions, 2016 Olympic Gold Medalists and top NCAA Division I women.

ELAC finished the day with three personal records.

The all-freshman ELAC team takes this experience to the regular season ending South Coast Conference Championships next week, set for at El Camino College. The Championship Prelims are on Tuesday and the Championship Finals will be on Friday, April 27. Both days begin at 1 p.m.

Freshman Sylvia Calvache (Rancho Mirage High School) ran a personal record at the Beach Invitational of 5:18.89 minutes in the 1,500-meter run at the Beach Invitational. She will move on in the event at the SCC Prelims as the No. 14th seed. Calvache will move on to the finals on Friday in the 5,000-meter run as the No. 9-seed.

Freshman Jazmin Romero (Roosevelt HS) finished with a personal record in the 800-meter run today in 3:04.60. Romero is on the bubble for a bid or an alternate spot to the Prelims in the 800 and the 1500 runs.

Freshman Yesenia Carias (Los Angeles HS) ran her third personal run today in 3:07.36. Carias is on the bubble for an at-large bid to the Prelims in both the 800 and 1500 runs.

Freshman Cameron Chang (South Pasadena HS) placed sixth with a time of 1:22.04 in the 11th heat of the 400-meter hurdles run today just behind Tiffin University senior Alexis Cloud. Chang will be the 12th seed in the Prelims seed in this event and the 14th seed in the 100-meter hurdles, an event she ran only in the beginning of the season.

Freshman Daisy Ortiz (Warren HS) did not compete in Long Beach but is ranked 22nd in the SCC in the 800 and 24th in the 1500 and should get bids to the Prelims.
