Huskies volleyball wins two straight shut outs

WILMINGTON, Calif. — The East Los Angeles College Huskies volleyball team won 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-21) at Los Angeles Harbor College in a South Coast Conference North Division crossover game tonight.

It was the sixth consecutive Huskies shutout victory over Harbor in five years.

ELAC also shut out Rio Hondo College 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-21) on Wednesday in Whittier.

The Huskies improve to 11-8 overall and 3-1 in the SCC North and remains in first place in the conference for the third straight week. ELAC knocked Rio Hondo out of a second-place tie and into last place.

In the 3-0 win against L.A. Harbor, the Huskies took the first set convincingly 25-12 and fought off Harbor rallies with solid play taking the final two sets 25-20, 25-21. ELAC hit .270 and held Harbor to .189. Two Huskies led with a total of 16 attacks, middle hitter Kayla Dickerson (Bell Gardens High School) with a game-high nine kills from 15 attempts with an impressive clip of a .467 and middle hitter Daija Walton (Perris HS) seven kills and a clip of .417.

Equally impressive was outside hitter Arianna Gomez (California HS) who had six service aces and right-side hitter Rachel Cruz (Garfield HS) who had 14 assists. Leading the ELAC defense was Gomez and outside hitter Yicel Quintero (South Gate HS) with 13 and 11 digs, respectively. Walton had a game-high three blocked shots.

In the 3-0 win vs. Rio Hondo, the Huskies faced a tougher squad also in the thick of a four-team race for the SCC title. ELAC prevailed in three close sets with two Huskies, Walton and Quintero, slammed seven attacks each. Walton hit an incredible .538 clip. Libero Victoria Trejo-Garcia (Downey HS) smashed a game-high three service aces while setter Samantha Villareal (Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary HS) had a game-high 16 assists and Cruz added 12.

On defense, Gomez led the Huskies with a game-high 13-digs while defensive specialist Ashley Castillo (Garfield HS) added 12. ELAC had 58 digs to 38 for Rio Hondo. The Huskies outhit Rio Hondo .253 while holding them to .083. The two teams were pretty much even with kills with ELAC hitting two more 29 to 27 but on less attempts 75 to 96. Rio Hondo almost doubled the amount of errors 19 to ELAC’s 10.

The Huskies host Cerritos College (5-11) next Friday, Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. in the South Gym. ELAC will try to defeat Cerritos for the second straight year after going 0-9 against the Falcons since 2012.
