MONTEREY PARK, Calif. — No. 4 College of the Canyons executed a 58-10 road rout of East L.A. College, in a game which saw the Cougars close things out with three fourth quarter touchdowns.
Canyons (6-1, 2-0) has won six straight contests having topped 30 points in every one of those victories. The 58 points scored against the Huskies (2-5, 0-2) represented the second highest total of the season.
COC quarterback Armani Edden connected with Tiquan Gilmore on a 10-yard touchdown pass at the 12:10 mark in the first quarter to give the Cougars an early lift. Kicker Tanner Brown booted his first of seven PATs of the day and Canyons was in front 7-0.
After a quick three and out by the Huskies, it took Edden just three snaps to find the end zone once more, this time hitting running back Jordan Anderson for what turned out to be a 29-yard touchdown and eventual 14-0 lead.
Brown's 25-yard field goal with three minutes to go in the quarter further tightened the Cougars control at 17-0. COC would go on to score on its first five possessions of the game.
Freshman linebacker Jonathan Thomas was able to pounce on an ELAC fumble to give Canyons the ball back in the opening moments of the second quarter.
Thomas also added a sack and three tackles to his stat line. Courtney Chandler and Tyler Richardson tied for the team lead with five tackles each.
Canyons running back Cyrus Zuell chipped in with a seven-yard touchdown run to cap a 10-play scoring drive and make it a 24-0 ballgame. He finished the game with 24 yards on seven carries.
East L.A. put together a 12-play scoring drive of its own, but was forced to settle for three on a 28-yard field goal by Juan Rangel.
The Cougars were quick to respond, however, as two plays later Edden launched a 60-yard strike to standout receiver Alonzell Henderson that stunted all hopes of a momentum shift for the Huskies. Henderson hauled in five catches for 121 yards in the game.
Brown's PAT set the score at 31-3 which is where things stayed heading into the halftime locker room.
Edden did not play in the second half, finishing the game a highly-efficient 12-of-17 for 214 yards and three touchdowns.
On COC's first drive of the second half backup quarterback Michael Wilson took the baton and ran with it, almost immediately targeting Emari Smith for a 23-yard completion and later scampering for a 26-yard touchdown run.
The Huskies tried to turn the tides once more, this time with an eight-yard run from ELAC running back Pierre Robinson that made things a bit closer at 38-10 with 1:53 to go in the quarter.
East L.A. would not score again in the game, as the Cougars add three more touchdown in the final frame.
Wilson hooked up with Vantraveous Williams on a 19-yard touchdown, but then saw a two-point conversion attempt fail for a 44-10 score.
Later it was Wilson to Lennox Howard for a 37-yard touchdown that moved things to 51-10. The sophomore made the most of his time under center with going 4-of-5 for 90 yards and leading the Cougars with 83 rushing yards on five attempts. His three total touchdowns tied with Edden.
Running back Kartillus McFadden put the exclamation point on things with a six-yard touchdown plunge and a 58-10 final score. McFadden led all running backs with 54 yards on nine carries.
Canyons racked up 547 yards of total offense and was 8-of-10 on third down. By comparison, the Huskies went 4-of-13 and recorded 246 yards of offense.
The Cougars will remain on the road for a week eight matchup vs. Ventura College. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2.
