Huskies Earn Invite to Beach Bowl at El Camino

by Cerwin D Haynes

On Sunday, East Los Angeles College football was formerly invited to play in the 2021 Beach Bowl versus El Camino College on Saturday, November 27th. The Huskies finished the regular season with a 5-5, consistently facing teams on the state top-25 list and beating the likes of College of the Canyons and Bakersfield to qualify for a postseason bowl bid. It will be ELAC's first bowl game since 2016, and its first as a National division member.

The Huskies will face a Warriors squad that is among one of the better porgrams in the state. El Camino finished their regular season campaign at 6-4, its fourth-straight winning season.

East LA will likely look to their defense to once again be the team's hallmark: they lead the National Northen League in yielding the fewest yards per game at a 243.6 along with the fewest rushing yards allowed at 61.4. They'll look to shut down Warriors' RB Stephen Bradford Jr., who leads the National Central League in rushing yards per game at 91.6.

When Bobby Godinez took over the reigns of East Los Angeles College football, he wanted to elevate the program to be able to compete with the very best in California. He had gone 16-5 in his first two seasons as head coach, including a Patriotic Bowl victory in his inaugural season of 2016. Those wins came as members of the American Metro League, and Godinez knew that in order to push the program higher, he had to take ELAC national... as in the National Northern League, a division that traditionally houses the very best football programs in the state such as Ventura, Bakersfield and College of the Canyons. Godinez believes that playing, "the best community college teams in the country week in and week out" affords his student athletes more exposure to four-year schools looking for top performers to offer football scholarships to.

A win Saturday will not only give the Huskies their first winning season as a National league member, but will serve as a cornerstone achievement in the program's rise to state prominence. It also gives the team even more exposure: postseason bowl games garner a lot of attention from fans, alumni, the SCFA and NCAA/NAIA recruiters looking for players to bring to the next level.
