2013 Season Preview

After finishing last season 4-14, the Husky women's volleyball team begin the 2013 season with a new swagger and desire to win. Head coach Elliott Walker returns for his second year at East Los Angeles College and has established a winner’s philosophy. “My job is not just to teach the players how to win playing volleyball, but also on how to be winners in life. So to go along with helping them craft their game, me and the other assistant coaches are going to build, structure, and organize them into adults,” Walker said. The Huskies have a full roster of 16, with four returners including Outside Hitter Jessica Castillo, Nissa Gamez, and Che Shian Hung and 12 hungry first year players. Freshman middle-hitter Eriazmin Mauries out of San Gabriel was unsure at first about playing collegiate volleyball, but with the help of the coaching staff and the support of her teammates, she’s ready to play. “I was afraid of what I was getting into, the game is a lot faster & smarter. But with the help of Coach Walker and the assistants, I was able to catch up really fast,” Mauries said. Mauries looks to be a staple in the Huskies offensive attack at 5-feet and 9-inches. The girls have a number in mind, “21 + 4,” 21 accounting for regular season wins and four for 4-postseason wins all of which accumulate to the Huskies winning their conference and the state championship. Whether the Huskies reach that number will be determined in time, but with a combination of the player’s determination and Walker’s leadership, it should be a stellar season for ELAC’s 2013 women’s volleyball team.
