Huskies Lose a Heartbreaker to LA Mission College

The women’s volleyball team is steadily improving, but one component they need to work on is closing out. Last Friday night, the Huskies were hosted by Los Angeles Mission college in a tight-competitive battle that Mission won in the fifth set, 3-2.

ELAC Head Coach Elliott Walker wasn’t down about the heartbreaking defeat, however said that the team must work on closing in when the opportunities present themselves. “We played good volleyball all game long, but just couldn’t close out our opponent for the win,” Walker said. The Huskies had key contributions from vital role players such as setter Nissa Gamez who had 40-assists for the game and defense specialist Hung Che Shiang who had 18-digs for the night.

During this stretch of preseason games the Huskies have played strong in every game. Taking division III Cal Lutheran’s JV team to five sets before falling in the fifth set. Then two weekends ago at the Imperial Valley tournament the Huskies went 1-2,  beating Cuyamaca College 3-2 in five sets, then fell to the 17th ranked team in the state, in Chaffey College 3-1. Then lost a hard fought battle with Mount San Jacinto College 3-2. “Each game played, the ladies learned to fight and play with a competitive edge. Implementing an excellent game strategy and then sticking with it. When faced with adversity they countered with a unique technique and skills to match the adversity,” Walker said.

The start of South Coast Conference play is on the horizon, when they meet Mount San Antonio College in their building on October 4. For now the Huskies will continue to work on crafting their game skills, mastering their knowledge of the game and develop a strategy for this Wednesday's quad at San Bernardino Valley College starting at 3 p.m.
