Huskies Rise to Challenge But Drops 3 Sets Against #10 El Camino College

Torrance, CA – El Camino entered the game prepared to attack the Husky defense, but found itself working hard against the Huskies (10-10, 4-5) transition game the wreaked havoc for the Warriors (17-29-0) in the South Coast Conference.

The Huskies fell into a quick 9-3 deficit after setter Vanessa Gutierrez stumbles onto the floor duringtransition. Not rattled, the Huskies closed the gap 8-12, but could not capitalize on the final points tohelp narrow the margin. The Huskies appeared a bit nervous, but soon found its groove after droppingthe first set.

In the second set, the Huskies found their groove and turned it up a notch. The Huskies jumped out to a6-4 lead However, several missed serves and attack attempts by the Huskies caused a swift change in thegame. The Warriors took a 4 five point lead(12-7) forcing a Husky time out. After thetime out, the Huskies set the floor on firewith two big kills from Breanna Trujillo andone from Mia Madott (pictured left) pushingto score to 12-10. Consistent and aggressiveplay continued providing some interestingdefensive rallies and attack side-outs. TheHuskies traded points back and forth with theWarriors until middle hitter, Kimberly Haneyput away three attacks to increase the lead to23-19. Three successive rallies ensueddemonstrating excellent ball control and offensive strategy between both teams. Resting on game point(24-21), the Warriors found themselves scrambling for aggressively attacked balls. Unfortunately,Breanna Trujillo working for that 22nd point saw the middle of the court open and chipped in a ball tohave it hit the tape of the net and fall back on the Huskies side, ending the comeback with a score of 25-21.

The third set was no different than the second. The two teams executed a strong game plan that made thegame exciting and highly competitive. Despite the 3 set loss, the Huskies walked off the court knowingthat they competed well against the SCC #1 seeded team and the California Community CollegeAthletic Association (CCCAA) #10 seeded team.
