Sophomores Help Put Away the Last Home Game

MONTEREY PARK, CA – The East Los Angeles Husky volleyball team (12-12, 6-7SCC) handed the Los Angeles Trade Tech Beavers (4-11, 2-11SCC) its eleventh loss on sophomore night inside the “E-rena”.

Freshmen outside hitter Breanna Trujillo lead the night with 26 kills a season high, 5 digs, 4 service aces, and 2 assists as five other Huskies chipped in for aid in the 3-2 match win. On sophomore night, several other young players along with leading sophomore athletes got a chance to showcase their talent.

Sophomore Eriazmin Mauries continued with her strong arm and smart play to notch 18 kills, 10 digs, 2 service aces, and 8 solo blocks for the evening. Mia Madott, freshman cranked down 18 kills, 11 digs, 2 service aces, and 2 blocks. Freshman Alexis Salazar continued to show improvement by adding 7 kills and 1 dig while sophomore Brittny Marmolejo came off the bench and nailed a kill and an assist kill that ignited a fire among the Huskies. Yeketrina Makarova, freshman added 3 kills and 3 blocks that kept the groove going for the Huskies.

Quarterbacking the floor, Husky setters Vanessa Gutierrez had 31 assists and 21 digs, AngelaCarrasco put up 22 assists, 21 digs, and 2 service, while Ashley Winet, freshman added 3 assists and 1 solo block.

Defensive specialists Jenifer Martinez contributed 6 digs, Sophia Leon 3 digs, and Jessica Nunez picked up 2 as part of the Huskies 83 digs.

The Huskies had a strong and positive night as demonstrated in the game statistics. On the night, the Huskies finished with a 0.423 hitting percentage, 83 digs, 8 service aces, and 11 blocks.

The win places the Huskies in a good spot for the post-season. With the win, the Huskies are a half game ahead of cross-town, conference contenders Long Beach City College.

In the efforts to secure the fourth seed in post-conference play, the Huskies travel to Long Beach on Wednesday, November 19, 2014 to play the host team Long Beach City College in the final season match at 6PM. The win will likely give the Huskies its first ever post-season At-Large bid into the California Community College Athletic Association Championships.
