Volleyball splits at home

MONTEREY PARK, CA — The volleyball team hosted a round-robin tournament earlier tonight and defeated Cerro Coso Community College of Ridgecrest 3-0 while coming up on a short end of a five-set loss against upstart San Bernardino Valley College 25-23, 14-25, 25-23, 21-25, 15-13.

East Los Angeles College pulled even at 5-5 overall.

In other action in the tournament, San Bernardino (3-8) knocked down Los Angeles Harbor College in three sets, 25-16, 25-18, 25-6. In a battle of winless teams, Cerro Coso (1-14) beat Harbor (0-4), 3-0: 25-13, 25-16, 25-17.

In the Huskies’ win against Cerro Coso, ELAC put together solid defense thwarting the Coyotes’ rallies with an alert offense.

In the second set ELAC was down six points, 13-7, when they scraped back with a 12-3 rally hitting in the lanes and blocking return serves at the net.

After a 20-all deadlock, ELAC scored three consecutive points and got to match point off a sophomore Breanna Trujillo (Montebello HS) slam. The Huskies closed out for the second -et win.

ELAC carried the momentum through the third set winning by two points and eventually the game, 25-20, 25-21, 26-24.

Trujillo and freshmen Alexis Diaz (L.A. Mendez HS) were the most consistent Huskies of the night. Trujillo had 12 kills and seven digs against Cerro Coso while Salazar had nine kills and eight digs. ELAC had a total of five serving aces against Cerro Coso.

The Huskies lost for the third time in four years to San Bernardino. “(The loss) today was mental. We lacked mental drive to perform,” said ELAC five-year Coach Elliott Walker. “They (San Bernardino) didn’t beat us, we beat ourselves with mistakes. We had six errors, three servers.”

After splitting the first two sets, the game momentum changer was the third set.

ELAC carried momentum from the 25-14 Husky second-set win, and built a 17-10 lead in the third set. The Wolverines, however, rallied to take back control.

As ELAC’s third-set lead was trimmed to 18-14, then 19-17, the body language of both teams said it all. “Our (ELAC) body language changed, that’s the first sign that mental inability steps in,” said Walker. The close battled set ended with a San Bernardino winning 25-23.

ELAC came close in the fifth set, but in the end the win belonged to the Wolverines. Trujillo and Salazar led the Huskies against San Bernardino with 24 and 14 kills, respectively. Sophomore Vanessa Peralta (L.A. Sacred Heart HS) had 46 setter assists.

“We played our game, but they had a lot of heart,” said ELAC sophomore Ashley Winet (L.A. Wilson High School). “We will learn from this and move on to get back the win from Cal Lutheran.”

The Cal Lutheran Junior Varsity beat ELAC on Sept. 11 in the South gym, 3-1: 25-15, 26-28, 28-26, 25-23.

The Huskies close out non-conference play with a game in Thousand Oaks against the Cal Lutheran on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m.
