Volleyball toughs it out with No. 4 El Camino

TORRANCE, CA.—The East Los Angeles College volleyball team held tough in the third set against the state’s No. 4-ranked El Camino College, but eventually lost 26-24 en route to a 3-0 loss to the Warriors.

ELAC, 5-7 overall and 0-1 in the South Coast Conference lost to El Camino (11-2, 1-0) in the first two sets 25-17, 25-12, then figured out the Warriors’ play on both defense and offense, and almost pulled it out.

El Camino built a 2-1 third-set lead to 16-8 when ELAC began a six point rally that included a kill from sophomore outside hitter Brenna Trujillo (Montebello High School) and two service aces from freshman defensive specialist Destanee Cortes (Schurr).

The Warriors responded with a 6-2 run to lead 22-16. ELAC then put together its longest rally of the night outscoring El Camino 8-1 to lead 24-23, but fell short in closing the set with a win.

The Warriors called a time out, regrouped and closed out the set and match with three consecutive points.

El Camino slammed 37 kills to ELAC’s 18. Trujillo had eight kills and 12 digs for the Huskies and sophomore outside hitter Alex Salazar (Mark Keppel) had six kills.

The Huskies closed out non-conference play with a 3-1: 22-25, 25-19, 25-22, 27-25 loss to the California Lutheran University junior varsity team Sept. 30 in Thousand Oaks.

Trujillo led the Huskies with 20 kills and 15 digs. Salazar had four kills, 10 digs and three service aces. Teammate sophomore Yekaterina Makarova (Almaty, Kazakhstan Military of Sport) added eight kills.

Freshman Vanessa Peralta (L.A. Sacred Heart) added 11 digs for ELAC, sophomore defensive setter Jessica Nunez (Bell) had three service aces and eight digs and sophomore Ashley Winet (L.A. Wilson) had two kills, two service aces and five digs.
