Five Huskies rank at the top of SCC (Attack Percentage)

MONTEREY PARK, CA — Nearing the end of the first half of conference play, the Huskies are two wins and three losses in the South Coast Conference with matches scheduled this week at Pasadena City College (Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 6 p.m.) and at Los Angeles Trade Tech College (Friday, Oct. 23 at 6 p.m.).

Amidst the work on the court, four Huskies are recognized as SCC statistical leaders among the top 50 in the conference. Since the start of the 2015 season, sophomore Breanna Trujillo (Montebello HS) has been ranked No. 1 in the hitting category. Ranked No. 1, Trujillo has played in 16 matches, 60 sets and posts 263 kills (0.260). Trujillo averages 15 kills per game, total digs 162 and has earned 293.5 of the Huskies season points. She is also ranked No. 5 in the state.

Trailing Trujillo is Alexis Salazar (Mark Keppel HS). Salazar is ranked No. 6 overall in the hitting category (0.204 average). Salazar moved from defensive specialist to accept the roll as the second outside hitter. In addition to her excellent hitting, she is also ranked in the top 10 in defensive digs. Salazar has aided the Huskies in earning 193.5 points for the team this season. As a state leader, Salazar is ranked No. 12.

The Huskies also receive support from sophomore Yekaterina “Kate” Makarova (Almaty, Kazakhstan / Military School of Sport) and sophomore Ashley Winet (Los Angeles Wilson HS). Among the conference middle hitters, Makarova is ranked No. 3 and is 22 overall. Kate holds a 0.220 hitting average and 0.70 blocking average.

Hitting on the right side, Winet climbs from No. 39 ranked to No. 34 within the last two weeks of competition. Winet has a 0.173 hitting average and is making strides at controlling the opponents attack as the right side blocker. Coupled with Makarova, the two form a big wall that often shuts down ELAC’s opponents’ outside hits. For a young player that stepped us as an alternate setter, Winet has a 0.55 blocking average.

Last, but not least, is freshman setter Vanessa Peralta (Los Angeles Sacred Heart HS) is holding her own in the assist category. Peralta has 401 assists and ranks No. 29 in the SCC and No. 32 in the state.

The accolades are dynamic in that the various ranking characterizes the growth and development of Husky volleyball. Congratulations to each of the Huskies. Continue to pursue academic and athletic excellence.
