Volleyball tops Cal Lutheran University JV

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Behind a season high 37 kills, the East Los Angeles College Huskies volleyball team defeated the California Lutheran University JV team in three straight sets 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-14).

It is the third time that the Huskies beat their non-conference opponents, the Lady Regals, since the rivalry began in 2013. It is ELAC’s first shutout win against them.

The Huskies came out polished with mixed attacks and unstoppable defense that resulted in the season’s biggest win and did it against four-year university women.

PAW TRACKS

Yicel Quintero (South Gate High School) led the way with 13 kills hitting .333. She might have had a season best effort this year with 13, however, not all of the season’s stats have been reported.

Two Huskies totaled an impressive eight service aces. Sophomore defense specialist Victoria Trejo-Garcia (Downey HS) had a team-high five service aces and libero Ashley Castillo (Garfield HS) hit three.

ELAC had a good night of passing with 56 digs as a result of constant communication on the court. Two Huskies had double digit digs. Garcia led with 11 while Gomez had 10. Quintero was close behind with nine and freshman setter Samantha Villarreal (Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary HS) added seven. Three Huskies had six digs apiece, Walton, Castillo and sophomore setter Rachel Cruz (Garfield HS).

The Huskies wall at the net included an impressive 10 blocked shots led by Walton with five. Sophomore middle-hitter Gisele Arredondo (South Gate HS) helped shut down the Cal Lutheran JV attacks with three blocked shots. Quintero had two.

The Huskies host Chaffey College in South Coast Conference play, Wednesday, Oct. 10. A win keeps ELAC in first place.
