ELAC upset in four sets but remains in first place

WALNUT, Calif. — East Los Angeles College was upset 3-1 (27-25, 24-26, 25-21, 25-15) at Mt. San Antonio College in South Coast Conference North play.

ELAC lost its first South Coast Conference match while Mt. SAC won their first.

The Huskies who improve to 10-8 overall and 2-1 in the SCC Division, entered the match favored tonight based on common opponents. Mt. SAC (6-12, 1-2) stopped ELAC's three-game win streak.

ELAC remains in a first-place tie with the loss with Pasadena City College (8-11, 3-1). Chaffey College (12-7, 2-2) is in third. This season marks the first time that ELAC has been in first in more than 25 years. However, it's been three decades since the Huskies have defeated Mt. SAC. ELAC will host the Mounties on Friday, Nov. 2 in a rematch.

Set 1: The teams traded offensive runs to the end, tied at 25-25. Two Mt. SAC outside hitters each had a kill, which gave the Mounties the first set 27-25. ELAC outhit the Mt. SAC .286 to .273 and scored first taking a 2-0 lead. Mt. SAC had more kills 17-12.

Set 2: Another nail biter continued. ELAC was outhit .262 to .250 and had less kills 17-13. The Huskies defense and timely offensive strikes earned the Huskies the 26-24 set win.

Set 3: Errors dictated play in this set. ELAC had more errors 9-8 but the Mounties won 25-21.

Set 4: The Huskies could not overcome their mistakes and lost the game, set and match 25-15. ELAC had 10 errors and was outshot in kills 13-5.

PAW TRACKS: Middle Hitter Daija Walton (Perris HS) and Kayla Dickerson (Bell Gardens HS) led the Huskies offense with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Outside Hitter Yicel Quintero (South Gate HS) had a team-high two blocked shots. Defensive Specialist / Libero Victoria Trejo-Garcia (Downey HS) had a team-high 10 digs.

ELAC setter Samantha Villareal had a team-high 16 assists while right side hitter Rachel Cruz (Garfield HS) had 13. Mt. SAC was led by outside hitters Jessica Morse and Alysha Tullar who each had double doubles with 15 and 13 kills / 12 digs and 11 digs, respectively.

UP NEXT: The Huskies are on the road next week at Rio Hondo College (4-12, 1-2) on Wednesday and Los Angeles Harbor College (6-8) on Friday. Each match begins at 6 p.m. The first round of conference play ends next week. Since conference matches are limited to eight, it's still a four-team race for the SCC title.
