Perhaps no other team had to deal with more game day drama resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic as did ELAC Women's Volleyball. From masking while in-game, to social distanced benches, to starting the season with no fans allowed at their games, the Huskies had a lot to overcome. Thankfully, they were able to complete the season while making a good deal of progress despite the win-loss record.

Looking ahead to 2022, head coach Dr. Elliott Walker believes the team has put last year behind them: thanks to a furious offseason of recruiting, he's amassed a young team that is looking forward to a more competitive season... complete without having to wear masks during the games.

As the Huskies prepare to hit the court this week, we caught up with the "good doctor" - aka "Doc" Walker - and got his thoughts as he embarks on another season.

SM:  Based on last year's results, what is your focus on going into this season?

EW: This year's focus is on developing the freshmen team members, emphasizing ball control, competitive offense and defense, and promoting good health and team chemistry.

SM:  How was it having a more normal offseason in all aspects?

EW: It was comfortable for all to have less stress. Students-athletes and coaching staff were able to practice and concentrate on the game without having the added distraction of Covid. I also believe the ladies will be better able to execute team goals and performance skills.

SM: How has practice looked as we approach the first game?

EW: Practices are going well so far. We have had excellent attendance, energy, and a strong showing of commitment.

SM:  Any athletes you would like us to keep an eye on this year?

EW: There's promise in all our athletes this season. However, freshman standouts are Roselia Cazares, Alejandra Alfaro, Alejandra Larios, Kiara Davis, and sophomores [are] Jasmin Gomez and Megan Melendez.

SM:  Thoughts on the upcoming season?

EW: The athletes are showing a high learning curve and are adapting well.  The coaching staff look[s] forward to a positive and productive season. We are excited about this team and their commitment to excellence.

After many years on the court, Doc Walker certainly knows what he likes to see, and what he expects from his team. Based on his outlook, we should all look forward to seeing our Huskies in action this year. Here's to a lot of aces, spikes and most important - wins!
