Huskies Snap Skid, Defeat Vikings in Straight Sets

East Los Angeles College (3-5, 9-7) was able to snap a six-game losing streak tonight by turning back the Vikings (0-7, 1-13) of Long Beach CC by a count of 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 27-25).

The Huskies came out strong in the first set: they gradually opened up a substancial lead by keeping Long Beach off balance on their digs primarily due to good ball placement on kill attempts with a few well-timed blocks thrown in. The trend continued into the second set, although with a 24-12 advantage, the Huskies stalled due to a series of unforced errors. LBCC rallied to score seven straight points, but East LA steadied themselves to get the set-point that momentarily eluded them.

In the third set, Long Beach responded with better court positioning and ball awareness. ELAC jumped out to a lead, but the Vikings caught up to tie the set at 19-up and ultimately take a 24-22 lead. Head Coach Dr. Elliott Walker called timeout - he would say after the game that the team "tightened up because they sensed the win". The Huskies scored the next two points to tie the set at 24, and Long Beach got the point after to go up 25-24. Once again, the Huskies found their grit to stave off LBCC's set-point to tie it again, and then the Green finally brought the win home by scoring the last two points for a 27-25 set win and 3-0 match win.
